Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello Everybody,

Just wanted to say hi from sunny or not so sunny Bournemouth which is on the central south coast of the UK in the county of Dorset.

Have battled with Diabetes all my life am still a Type 2 on Pioglitazone and Rapaglinide tablets only each day. Officially diagnosed in 1990.

Mum became Diabetic when pregnant with me .... all my fault hee hee

She used to be treasurer of the local group for many years and before the local hospitals used to put all new insulin dependant Diabetics through a hypo it was my Mum and often me in tow at 3am in the morning legging it out doing home visits and telling eople what to do over the phone.

My Mum then started meeting with people in their own homes and supervising a controlled Hypo as the hospitals refused to do this....... now this is unheard of and sounds horrific and so stupid but back in the 80's thats how things were done sadly.

So have had a very knowledgeable if somewhat automatic dis respect for so called Diabetic specialists until they prove to me they actually know what they are talking about abd are not total quacks.

Sadly ignorance is still very much amongst our medical fields of expertise (she says tongue in cheek)

Only last year my Mum had a car accident which the care she got from the ambulance staff and the A & E staff could of caused her to be admitted when all she needed was a quick xray nothing major, but I felt I could of lost her due to their lack of knowledge.

I am not afraid to challenge and I do regularly all the professionals I deal with and will continue to do so.

I voluntarilly give general basic Diabetes awareness talks to groups via the peopel I meet and help and hope to get involved with the speakers volunteer program that Diabetes UK runs.

I do support sessions for referrals from friends who need relationship counselling, weight loss, food addiction and relationships with food etc along with any other things and the odd bit of doggie fostering when various rescues need help in an emergency. This year I hope to expand and build my business to advertise locally rather than just helping people I know.

Looking forward to learning from everybody and also being able to help where I can also.

D x

Its great to have another experienced member join the ranks.............

welcome............🙂

Hi H&S, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sure you'll find a lot of like-minded individuals here! Many of our members have unfortunately encountered poor standards of care, whilst many others (myself included) have received excellent care - it is a shame that there is such a wide variation in the knowledge and skills of our health care professionals.

Please feel free to join in on anything that takes your interest! Everyone is very friendly and if there is anything we can do to help and support you, just let us know 🙂 I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Welcome to the forums Helper and Seeker 🙂

I used to live a little bit north of Bournemouth (but not done so for ~14 years)

Hi

We are in Bournemouth area too - do you go to Bournemouth or Poole hospital (we are Poole) or 'just' GP?

Was very disappointed that local branch Diabetes UK closed down not long after my daughter was Dx (so I gather) - but with your connections perhaps you know more than me?🙂

Sorry to hear about the difficulties you have had with health care, but there must be some good ones, sounds like your Mum is for a start!

Hope to chat with you more soon 🙂

Welcome!!🙂
My daughter was diagnosed 5 years ago and the hospital did NOT induce a controlled hypo either. I've never even heard of that.

Must have been over 40 years ago, because they certainly didn't do it when I was diagnosed either.

In any case it really isn't necessary with all the modern insulins we have now. And with the ability for flexible eating and dosing, the opportunity to make dosing errors is far far greater than what it was on 1 jab (max 2 jabs) a day and a fixed eating pattern - so the likelihood of any IDD not recognising a hypo and how to deal with it in VERY short order post DX, is practically zilch these days!

BDEC is regarded as a centre of excellence for Diabetes care and innovation by patients and medics throughout the land. Poole hospital is equally good according to patient report.

I have no idea what happened in your parent's case, it's very hard for me to believe it happened in Bournemouth TBH. But OTOH let's face it - outside of specialist D clinics and Wards - the NHS broadly are NOT good with diabetes At All ..... so why would one expect it to be different even there?

Hi D. Welcome 🙂

I was put through a controlled hypo (although I didn't know what to expect and told them I was feeling the symptoms but wasn't. The age of BG meters was not then upon us!) in the hospital at diagnosis. That was late 70s Greater London but plenty of ignorant consultants there too.🙄

I also used to live in Bournemouth for a couple of years many years ago.

Just to clarify, is what you do voluntary or is it a business ?

Rob
