At risk of diabetes
Hello people.
I am a 61 year old who was diagnosed with prediabetes for the second time.
My History.
First Diagnosed in 2019. Sorry, can't remember what HBALC was I think 46.. Doctors advise was to cut down on sugary stuff, and white bread pasta etc. I had been an excessive amount of icecream.
I cut down But was still eating breakfast cereal, and other wheat based items. I cut down on chips, icecream, chocolate in particular.
I was looking at the amount of carbs in stuff.
December, went to philippines.
Cereal for breakfast. I think it was banana porridge bought in a store.
Other meals, small bit of rice, scrambled eggs, chicken, dried fish.
But also icecream 2 or three times a week.
Also food from takeaways usually chicken and chips, maybe twice a week.

When I came home, I had lost, I would say over a stone. Well it was pointed out to me that my excess belly had gone.
When I was tested my Hbalc was normal.
So I don't know what would have happened if no philippines.

April 2021. Tested Again. Back in Prediabetes mode. My HBALC is 44.
Doctors advise is same. Refused Glucose monitor, because I am "not" diabetic. I put "not" in quotes, because i know there are are arguments as to whether Prediabetic is a meaningful term.
Height 5ft 11. BMI (41, lets say 42 for the hell of it)

Welcome @Irish 🙂 The banana porridge sounds nice. You were clearly ok with a moderate amount of carbs. Your weight loss probably helped a lot.

As you’re only just into the ‘danger zone’, continuing to lose more weight should help a lot.

Yep, It was. But I can't get it here. I did see a banana porridge recipe from a bbc website, but the carbs were 50. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/baked-banana-porridge
Then I saw this jamaican one, which doesn't mention carbs, but looks as it might have less.
Thanks for replying Inka.

Welcome to the forum @Irish

Sorry to hear your HbA1c has crept up again. But it does sound like you still have a reasonable capacity for metabolising carbohydrate, so a few tweaks may be all that is required to get you back on track.

If you need to self fund your BG meter, the most affordable meters members here have found are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 - which both have test strips at around £8 for 50.

Quite a few members here use a test-review-adjust approach, checking their BG immediately before eating and again 2hrs later and adjusting their menu to aim for a 2-3mmol/L rise after 2hrs, ideally below 8.5.

And yes, prediabetes doesn’t seem to be an official classification as such, more just a shorthand for saying someone is at risk of developing diabetes.

Hope you find the forum helpful, and let us know how you get on 🙂
