Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Quite frankly I'm shocked only found out via a medical for a job. Type two. I'm not an unhealthy eater I love pasta and rice, don't like potatoes (except the skin on jkt but I detest brown rice, wholegrain pasta, and brown bread (don't mind Rye bread). I do like fish and chicken but I can't be bothered to cook veg as I live on my own, often skip meals and can't eat salad due to IBS so looking at this it looks like I'm actually going to either die of starvation or have a heart attack. I feel like a condemned woman. What has really peed me off is I'm the healthiest of all my friends none of whom have it! I have been out of work on and off for a while and just as I was about to kick start my career..... Wham the body says no. Anyone else feel like me? At the moment I'm angry and thinking sod it I'll make the best use of what time I have left, enjoy myself and be damned because I cant eat food I simply don't like and I like a drink on a Saturday as in a bottle of pinot and soda!

It's a bummer but you have to face up to it and deal with. So the good news - wine is fine to drink as virtually no carbs. Just avoid dessert wine. I wouldn't drink a whole bottle because since going low carb I get tipsy quicker! The bad news you need veg. So pull your finger out Buy frozen and you can cook a handful quickly. Bye bye to pasta and rice filling your plate it's all carb which turns to sugar so small portions and bigger portions of protein.

Increase exercise will help and you can fight back against diabetes.

What was your level when diagnosed?

Helen not surprised you feel angry...same here when diagnosed...pretty peed off...no idea what a type 2 diagnosis meant...ignored it initially...very often felt 'what's the point'...now (7 months in) have a different perspective...probably not the right time to start issuing advice...telling you need time to come to terms with it...you can manage it and so on...I had so much of that found it tiresome...however don't really believe you are just going to 'make the best use of the time you've got left'...otherwise you wouldn't have come here...wait for a few days...think about it...yes it does require adjusting your diet/lifestyle but not as drastically as you may think...not easy but worth doing...keep us updated.

Sorry about your diagnosis Helen, but as you must have realised, the public perception of "fat and unhealthy" is totally misleading. Type 2 is all about insulin resistance. You'll be able to manage it better if you eat fewer carbs (don't need to cut them out altogether), and avoid eating high GI foods on an empty stomach. My advice would be to get yourself a blood glucose meter if you haven't been given one by the GP, and check your blood glucose levels for a couple of weeks before meals and 2 hours after, keeping a diary of what you eat (eat what you normally have). Then you can see for yourself which foods cause you issues and which you can "get away with". It's not great news, but it's doable 🙂. Also, exercise helps a little insulin go a long way - ie it increases your sensitivity to insulin. Therefore it's a good idea to go for a brisk walk or something after a meal.

Welcome. Re cooking veg, you can buy microwave steam bags, veg cooks in about 3 mins in the microwave, if I am being lazy I buy the ready chopped veg and put it in microwave.

Roasting veg while cooking your meat or fish only takes 35 mins.

Don't give up, you can turn this around your life is not over.

Hi Helen, & welcome to the forum. The fact that you hate brown/wholemeal stuff ain't a bad thing, as these can also raise blood sugar, albeit a bit slower than the white equivalent. But you must try introducing veg. You say you're diet isn't unhealthy, but without veg, it is. As @Grannylorraine says, veg are quick & easy to microwave, or shoved in the oven with something else.

Hi Helen ,welcome.
Of course you upset and angry, that's perfectly normal. The media etc has got it all wrong, T2 is not all about our lifestyle, being overweight and eating lots of cr**p etc, Instead it has an awful lot to do with our genes. Of course if we are pre disposed to it genetically those poor choices may just speed it up.

I was the first one we know to be diagnosed in my family, this was back in the 90s, now is their are several on both sides of the family none of which fit the recognised profile, ie Fat, unfit or eating too many unhealthy things .

It's carbs our bodies can't handle too well, the worst ones are, potatoes, rice, pasta white bread, fruit juice is just packed full of sugar as are grapes.
They're are substitutes though.

Diabetes is one of those conditions that can be managed well.

Feel free to ask questions

Hi Helen and welcome to the gang. Have they turned you down for a job because you have diabetes? Diabetes is classed under the Equalities Act and so unless this job was one of the few that cannot be done if you have diabetes, then they are not allowed to discriminate against you just on the diabetes diagnosis itself.

Welcome from a fellow T2 who's just two years in.

Interesting avatar, @Ralph-YK. Can't work out if they're limes or wasabi nuts.🙂
