Type 2
Hi
I got diagnosed shortly before Christmas with Type 2, just to top off a really awful year. My Hb1ac was 55. I have just been told to lose weight and reduce carbs, no other support/advice.
I am trying to go walking most days, but I have mobility problems so it is not always easy.
I didn't realise how many things contain carbs!! But I do have a pretty good, relatively low carb diet normally. I have just bought a glucose monitor, so hopefully that will indicate where I am struggling.
Any other help or advice people could give me would be very welcome.

Hi welcome to the forum. I am a type one so not the best to be advising you. From other posts I'v seen testing before eating and two hours after seems to be the general recomendation and that should help you if you are sensitive to some food stuffs more than others. I am sure there will be plenty of info arriving soon.

My wife also has mobility problems so understand the problems of trying to get any form of exercise.

Wish you well.

Thank you.
I doesn't help that my daughter (16yrs) has anorexia and prefers high carb foods, so I am having to make 2 different meals each day to manage both our problems.
Also thanks to covid, neither my daughter or I have any dietitic input as they are not seeing anyone :(

Hi @Gellycat , great name! The book or App "Carbs & calories" will give you a good idea what grams of carbohydrates are in food & portion sizes. Family meals are still possible, you go low on carbs & maybe have another veg and your daughter can have rice/pasta/potato etc as she wishes. You can both eat the same meat/fish etc. Your bg meter will advise you which meals or portion sizes have been good or not. In the early days I tested on waking and then before meals and 2 hours later and noted it all down in a food diary. There's loads of info on other threads and lots of people to help and advise you. PS please don't hold out much hope for GP or dietetic support. It's not readily available regardless of covid and doesn't always approve of the low carb approach. You have to work out what works for you. All the best.

I was low carbing all through looking after the family and did not find it all that difficult to make the same basic meal for everyone, just adding something with carbs for the family and a low carb option for me. It is probably just a case of sorting out meals - I used to do rice and cauliflower in the steamer, for instance, and used a separator in the chip pan to keep potatoes from my low carb option - once you settle into the best things to pick to cook together it gets easier.

Thank you for your advice.
My daughter's favourite meal is roast, so when I do that I just have meat and veg (which I prefer) and she has all the potatoes!!!
I was just a bit of a culture shock as I am only in my early 40's so was not expecting it.
I am starting to adjust but still shocked at carbs on places I didn't expect!! Any advice on pasta substitutes? Something I used to cook a lot, especially on work days.
Thanks again for you help and advice.

I used to just have the sauce without the pasta, when my family had pasta or rice dishes. You are doing the right thing with roast.

Hi Gellycat, just popping in to say welcome to the forum!

You're getting some great advice so I'd just echo testing yourself two hours after you eat as food can impact different people in different ways.

Have a read of the main site to get some ideas on food and managing with diabetes in general https://www.diabetes.org.uk/.

Please do feel free to ask any questions you may have.

You can make noodle like strips by beating an egg with a little water and some psyllium flour - about a teaspoonful.
make a pancake with olive oil in a frying pan, roll like a swiss roll and cut into narrow strips.
