Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi

I joined the forum a few weeks ago but have yet to post on here (being a bit nervous to do so!) I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes 6 years ago and was told I was left with type 2 after my son was born. Over the past 5 years I have had no real support from my GP, other than being told to lose weight (if only it was that simple!). Abut 18 months ago I was put onto Metformin (slow release) and have tried to eat healthily and lose weight. I know carbs are a particular problem for me and so I'm thinking of trying a LCHF diet. I haven't got a clue really of what I need to do to lose weight and manage my sugars at the same time. So, I've joined the forum in the hope that there are some kind people out there who will be able to offer me some support and guidance.

I read the forum regularly and hope to have the confidence to post and ask for help.

Steph

Hello, Steph and welcome to the forum. I was just like you, I lurked for ages before plucking up courage to post. Now there's no stopping me! There's been quite a lot of discussion on here recently about LCHF diets, have a browse in the food section, and ask anything you need to. Nobody ever thinks a question is stupid, a question is just something you need to know the answer to.

Hi, Welcome, you will get some great advice here, I too am trying to lose weight, I stated low carbing last week, I've found the best help is coming from using a food diary, I use "my fitness pal" and I'm keeping track of my BG levels on a spreadsheet I can then see how and what I'm eating and how it affects me, I've been doing bloods prior and +2 hours of eating, its been very useful I lost 3lb this week. good luck Al

Thanks Robin. I plan to use the forum as much as I can.

Hey Steph
I can't offer much advice on LCHF but wanted to say hello and welcome. Don't be nervous, we're a nice bunch I promise 🙂

Hi Al

Thanks for the advice! I am determined to lose weight and am looking forward to trying low carb. I will also track my BG too (a great idea). What is your limit for carbs on a daily basis?

Thanks
Steph

Hi steffy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Do you have a meter so you can test the effect of meals on your blood glucose levels? Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand the process 🙂

I don't have any advice about the LCHF diet, but it's worth having a look in the food section where people have come up with some very inventive alternatives to carbs to keep meals varied and interesting 🙂

When I started last week my first day was 172 carbs I think, I posted a thread "First full day recording" since then thanks to some great advice on here I have reduced it to 23 so far today, and I've had 3 meals today, I will snack later most probably nuts. I would like to keep to 50 a day, but I wont beat myself up if I go over now and then.

Hope this helps, all my bg have been under 8 today, and I had a 2 mile walk

Hi

Thanks for the welcome and guidance. Yes I have a meter - my GP did agree I could have one to test now & then. I am going to start recording the effect what different food / meals have on my BG. I already know carbs send my sugars up, hence looking at a LCHF diet. I will have a look at your recommended read too.

Thanks
Steph

Thanks Al, really useful x

Hi and welcome to the forum. We are all different when it comes to how much carbs we can tolerate. I'm fine with porridge but it will send some people blood glucose levels soaring. We all have to find what works for us. This forum is a great place though for help and advice.

Hello from another Steph and welcome. I too lurked for quite a while before taking the plunge. Low carbs is something of a personal choice as to how many to stick to. my dietician at the hospital tells me I need 120g a day, but I tend to be happy around the 100 mark, although I am not trying to loose weight.

Hi Steffy
Another welcome! 🙂

Hi Steffy and welcome!
Good luck with lower carb eating. It should help with both weight loss and BG levels. Let us know how you get on. 🙂

Wow Alan. I can't get my carbs that low. Maybe it's my mind set and lack of prep

Hi steffy and welcome
