I need to lose loads of weight and adjust my diet and exercise to make this happen.

Ella you will be surprised just how shoddy some of our care has been left to our own devices, and finding out stuff from here rather then from our GP.If your thinking of going onto a diet then we have a weight loss section of the forum so maybe think about popping in there as well as loads of encouragment and support you will get great advice on diets etc.
Are you on any medication or is it diet/exercise at the moment. x

Ella welcome to the forum being told its your fault is not constructive - there are many people who are overweight and not diabetic. Yes its a risk factor and if you have a predisposition then it may make it more likely - but how is telling you its your fault going to help.

Saying that losing weight will help as it will make you more sensitive to the insulin you are producing.

It will take some time for you to get your head around things but have a look at this link there may be something to help you

Have a look in the weight loss and food sections - you may find extra support and tips there.

Welcome Ella. I'm like you. I was only diagnosed with type 2 at the end of April. I'm also overweight and am on diet and exercise. Have you had an appointment with your diabetic nurse yet. If not you should enquire about that from your GP. I'm still trying to get to grips with it but the people on here have been so helpful and they will answer any questions you have, however trivial.

thank you steff and Margie. yes i came out of appointment and cried. I have spent a good 2 hours looking on various web sites for help and advice and now feel as though i have come to the right place. no medication has been given to me only diet and exercise recommended.
I will look at those threads for help. thank you x

Hi Ella, welcome to the forum.

Now the good news. I was diagnosed type 2 in October 2009. At the time I weighed over 18 stone (having lost a stone due to the diabetes symptoms kicking in). Over the next year I got myself down to 14 stone and the diabetic symptoms were drastically reduced. I'm not 'cured' but can now lead a pretty normal life again (I'm now diet/exercise only).

With a bit of luck you can look forward to the same and also actually feel so much healthier! I for one haven't felt this good for decades!!

Good luck with everything,

Andy 🙂

Hi Ella and welcome to the forums. As you get to know us better you'll soon discover that your experience and feelings are very familiar. I've been Type2 since 2003 so let me tell you from the outset....IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT! Now that's out of the way, let's get you on the right path to helping yourself come to terms with this stupid condition we all have in common. Ask as many questions as you can think of and someone will be able to answer it for you. Take care and I look forward to getting to know you better. XXXXX

Hi Ella and welcome. I was diagnosed ten days ago and trying to get my head round it all. Really been a roller coaster. Am sure my husband believes I've brought it on myself with binge eating and sweet tooth. Doesn't help how I feel.

Hi Ella, and a warm welcome xx

Has your GP told you to test with a meter and strips? If not search out postings on testing since if you're D/E controlled the only way to check that what you're eating is ok for you will be to test. For instance, if you were provided with some sort of diet sheet that said to switch white bread to brown and all would be well may not be true for you - some type 2's can eat bread with no problems but others cant eat it at all without "spiking" (when the blood sugars go up after eating certain foodstuffs). The same is true of things like cereals, pasta and rice - some can eat no problem but other's cant. The only way to check out what is right for you is to test, test, test.

Finally, do check out some of the other parts of the site like off the subject and the jokes when you fancy being cheered up :D

PS I would have put up the link from Alan S but I can't find it, but I'm pretty sure that someone much more at ease with technology than me will put up the link for you.
