Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello! I have had Type two since about 1998. But guess what?. I only joined Diabetes UK a few months ago! For me the journey through type 2 land has involved a lot of shall we say 'non-compliance' with doctors order. It was only in 2017 that I finally took my diabetes under control and now I am almost ruthless in my ability to manage my diabetes. Yes, you said it. Nail that disease! So now I am even a 'patient with lived experience' according to my local CCG and I do talks and teaching around diabetes control. I owe an awful lot to the Michael Mosley Low Blood sugar diet of which I am a great fan. My weight went from 22 Stone down to 13 Stone. in a couple of years.

In December 2021 I accepted the role of Chair of the newly founded Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark group of Diabetes UK. This was as a result of my sitting on the Obesity and Diabetes board of the CCG and absent mindedly said to people;'You know we don't have a Diabetes group in Lewisham, don't you''. Well we have one now.

Unfortunately, not long after I had finally achieved control over my diabetes I was diagnosed with Diabetes related Macular Degeneration. My eyes are losing their sight and that is where we are today.

Hi clivelive, welcome to the forum.

Glad you found us as it sounds as though you've got a wealth of experience to share! Lots of members struggle with getting to grips with everything at first so it's nice for others to read that you're now managing things well.

Congratulations on your progress and appointment! I really think having as much support as possible makes a huge difference so it's great that you're a part of leading an offline community.

Really sorry to hear about the condition of your eyes, can't be easy so I hope you're getting the support you need.

Feel free to have a poke around the forum and let us know if we can help in anyway.

I believe the Macular Society provides good support and visual aids for those who would benefit from them. They have local groups who arrange events.
I only know as my mother out law now 97years old has had age related MD for a number of years and has had quite a lot of equipment in the past to help her.
