At risk of diabetes
Hello my husband is a type 2 diabetic his diabetes is not controlled and He's having a terrible time of it the doctors are trying to help.
I on the other hand am about to be diagnosed as pre diabetic according to my latest blood tests at the same time my colesterol?and blood pressure is too high .Non of which has ever been a problem in the past well except the bp(I have a phone appointment with the nurse in a couple of weeks)
but once medicated for my autoimmune hashimotos under active thyroid it returned to normal.
now everything's up I suspect my thyroid to be out of wack again but still waiting for that blood test.I take thyroxin .apart from that I was diagnosed with cll leukaemia in November 2020 the leukocytes were low then but they've jumped to double this year from last year .
So I'm concentrating on my diet again .I used to do slimming world but because of covid 19 I couldn't get to classes and fell /jumped off the wagon I'm now just over a stone over weight at 10 st 4 dressed and in shoes.
I'm 5'2" and just turned 7 0 so if it's ok I'd like to watch and learn.thanks for letting me join.

Sorry to hear about your husband’s diabetes, and that you have now been told you are also at risk.

Changes in BP, cholesterol and blood glucose levels, along with increasing weight, can be an indication that a person’s metabolism is beginning to struggle.

The good news is that for many people, making some adjustments to diet can be enough to help the metabolism cope better and reset itself.

In terms of blood glucose management, one of the the most powerful changes you can make is to begin to reduce the amount of carbohydrate you are eating. While there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. That doesn’t mean you can’t ever eat any of those things again, but it’s helpful to look at portion sizes, and consider some swaps and tweaks to your regular meals.

Many new members find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu.

Hope you find a way to balance the needs of your risk of diabetes with your other health conditions 🙂

Thanks Mike ,I have the my fitness pal app and I'm amazed at the amount of carbs there are in all sorts of food and the sugars in fruit.
I'm going to suggest to the nurse on the 20 th that my thyroid bloods are brought forward because in the past my blood pressure has reduced when properly medicated.apart from that I'm wondering if I upgrade to my fitness pal app if it would help me is it worth paying for the premium one?

My other half really engaged with the low carb dietary changes as although not diabetic wanted to lose some weight and rather annoyingly typically he has lost more than me. He has quite a few extras like fruit juice and biscuits but otherwise is happy with the new regime, so that has helped me enormously in finding meals that we both like.

Hello can I ask if you have an app or what changes you made how do you know if your goods low carb? Thanks.

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a techno dinosaur so the Carbs and Cals book is my bible or the internet for things not in there. The nutritional info on packaging (not the traffic light numbers) is invaluable in making a decision about how much to have. I decided on 60-70g carb per day divided between different meals and allowing for drinks as well. A digital kitchen scales is a must so you can weigh portions of things.
I kept a food diary writing everything down and recording my blood glucose readings from my monitor.

thank you I'm also abit of a tec dinosaur ,I'm using my fitness pal at the moment as I'd be lost without it .
yes I could just look things up but it's time consuming and my memory is shot (thyroid) 60-70 g of carbs per day doesn't sound like it gives much room for carbs even like porridge for breakfast a sandwich with lunch and potatoes for tea. I'm amazed at where the carbs hide,I'm sure I saw carbs in a and the sugar for a large banana was 17g. I mean who new!

I don't have any of those things, maybe a small potato or homemade potato salad. Have a look at my meals in the What did you eat yesterday for the type of things I have.
