i have a question ,i have been a type 2 diabetic for 5 years i had a blood test last week and have benn told i am not a diabetic and dont know quite what to make of this

What actual blood test did you have last week, what was the result of it and how have you been treating your diabetes since you were told you had it?

I had a diabetic review been on metformin for 5 years now told my sugar levels have been excellent for years

Do they mean your HBA1C is now not in the Diabetic range or you were never Diabetic? Are you still on Metformin. I think you need another discussion with who ever you have been seeing and ask for the actual explanation and numbers.

I really cannot get my gead around it, i am not in remission i have not reversed it the words were you are not a diabetic she will look into it told me to half the medication for now and come back in 4 months

Some prefer to use the term well-controlled. This is all making less sense to me, who did you see a Dr. Or a Nurse? It you are not Diabetic why have they told you to continue to take Medication???
As I said previously you need to be given actual numbers of your results, I would ask for a second opinion and or speak to the practice manager. I would also suggest it might be worth calling the helpline at the top of the forum.

Hi @Lindaggg. One of the problems of being a professional is that when communicating to somebody who is not a professional you have to be a chameleon and adjust what you say and how you say it to match the recipients level of knowledge. Some professionals are very good at it but most are not. Sounds like your GP tends towards the second category.

If it were me I would be asking the surgery for all your HbA1c results over the last few years, so I could see for myself what has been going on. I'm guessing that your HbA1c has come down below the diagnostic level of 48 and it is reasonable to assume that is due to the medication and whatever efforts you have been making. If that is so, then saying you are not diabetic is probably technically correct but it does little to help you plan your way forward.

Keep plugging away until you get to the bottom of things with it explained to you in a way which makes sense.

Sorry to hear you’ve been left rather confused by the phone call with your surgery. We are all guessing really, but it seems likely that your blood glucose is so well managed that your surgery consider you to have moved into the non-diabetic range.

With luck you will be able to keep your blood glucose equally well managed as you come off metformin, though you may need to slightly adjust your diet and reduce your carbohydrate intake a little to achieve this (depending on how much help the metformin is giving you)

As others have suggested, if you are concerned or confused by what you have been told, it would be worth calling the DUK helpline (office hours Monday-Friday) to chat things through.
