Hi, I’m Sharon. I am 65 years old and have had Type1 diabetes for 53 years. Diagnosed when I was 12 in 1966.
I have seen a huge improvement in treatments and equipment during this time.
If you are newly diagnosed, do not worry as now is the best time. I have some complications as a result of poor treatment ( Insulin from cows!)
It would be nice to hear from fellow long term diabetics x
 
Hi Sharon and welcome to the forum. Although I’m not type 1 or a long term diabetic I just wanted to say hello and I’m sure there will be others along today who are.

There are a number of forum members who have been 'doing' diabetes for over 50+ years and beyond, hopefully they'll be along soon.

I'm a sort of mid termer with 41 years done and agree that the improvements in technology and insulin over the decades have made such a difference to getting and keeping control, getting home blood glucose testing instead of urine testing was a game changer.

Are you using MDI or a pump and have you tried or are you using the Libre?

We're a friendly bunch on here who support and help each other along and I hope you find the forum as helpful as I have 🙂

I am 74 years old type 1 for 44 years. My insulin came from pigs! We are more closely related to pigs than to cows it would appear. If I remember correctly pig insulin differs from human by five amino-acids and and cows' by seven.

The main difference in treatment is the ability to check BG at home in a few minutes. It used to take 4 hours at least with a fully equipped bio-lab. Control was more of a black art that a scientific process then.
