Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I am a 65 year old male with diabetes 2, I also have a few other problems Heart etc. So I have been trying to eat healthy for quite a while, I also quit smoking 5 weeks ago. I am a little concerned about my lunch because I have 5 fruits a day in a bowl with 2 table spoons of Alpro yogurt but the fruit I have recently discovered has sugar in it, and being I am trying to lose weight I have tried to limit my sugar intake lost 9lbs so far but because fruit is recommended for a healthy diet there is a conflict what would you advise ? Thanks

Hello Rex, welcome to the forum. Are you taking any medication, or are you 'diet and exercise' only? Have you been given any guidance at all as to diet? Here are my thoughts (no doubt others will have lots more to add).

Fruit does contain sugar, so unlimited quantities are not usually advised. When I was first diagnosed, I was told no more than 2 portions per day and no grapes (which are little packets of sugar). I don't always follow this now! I have lots of vegetables with my dinners, often instead of potatoes/rice/pasta. Be very wary of cereals and bread - they can raise your blood glucose faster than sugar!

Take care to read the labels on yogurts. It's best to go for 0% fat, no added sugar ones if you're trying to lose weight. How much to you want to lose?

Hi rex1000, welcome to the forum 🙂 Well done on stopping smoking, and on your weight-loss to date! Some fruits are better than others, in that they are not as high sugar, and release their energy more slowly. Grapes tend to be one of the worst, and strawberries (or other berries) tend to be better. It is also better to eat them as part of a main meal, as the other elements of the meal will slow their digestion and conversion to sugar. There is a good general guide to eating healthily and appropriately when you have diabetes (actually good even if you don't!) called the GL (Glycaemic Load) diet - I would recommend getting a copy of The GL Diet for Dummies as a good, easy to follow introduction.

Are you on any medication for your diabetes? Do you test your blood glucose levels with a meter? This is the best way to find out how different foods affect you, as people's tolerances can vary a great deal.

Another 2st 10b

I was 15st 7 I am down to 14st 12 with a BMI 30.5
for my height and age my target is 25 BMI and 12st 2lb so I have been doing quite a bit of research and will continue to do so until I have a better understanding! I am taking tablets to control the diabetes, but I would like to control it through diet if possible, stopping smoking has helped, losing the weight and more exercise is the plan.

Welcome to the forum rex :0)
What tablets are you on out of interest?

Welcome to the forum Rex 🙂 and well done on quitting smoking! Fruits do contain sugars, but the content varies. Mangoes, pineapple, grapes, etc. all have lots, whereas strawberries, raspberries, blueberries etc. have less. For weight loss, a bowl of fruit is likely to contain fewer calories than for example a sandwich and donut, but the sugar content could cause you an unwanted spike in your blood glucose level. Do you enjoy eating salads and raw vegetables, e.g shredded cabbage and grated carrot, with nuts and seeds? This can be quite filling with a piece of grilled chicken or fish.

Welcome to the forum, nice to see another oldie on here. I am 70 and have been diabetic for about 14 years and have recently started on Insulin, I also have heart problems and have just had my fourth stent. I was on various tablets for many years and eventually got onto a max dose, so had to change to insulin, which I might add, is much better than all the tablets.
