Type 2
I'm new to the site I was diagnosed as having Type 2 diabetes last year but my diagnoses was questioned recently. Unfortunately I definately have Type 2. I'm struggling to except my second diagnoses and feel very down about it all. I received a letter after my retinal screening saying I have slight changes in my eyes. I'm now stressed out and worried sick x

Hi, and it's rather unusua for a non-spammer to be making their first post in the mddle of the night! However, the spammers are easy to spot as they also have usernames which look like their cat walked across the keyboard. 😉

Re. the eyesight problems, they may be nothing to worry about; I had background retinopathy a few years ago, and my next check was scheduled for 6 months instead of a year, but at the next check it had disappeared. With luck (and good control of course) this may be your experience.

Well, good night -- must get back to bed. 🙂

Hi Peachy a warm welcome to the forum, pleased you found up so quickly.

Robert im strugglin to understand why you mentioned spammers

Thank you for the information about my eyes. I'm having trouble sleeping my head is a bit all over the place. Thank you for the warm welcome. There's so much to learn about diabetes and I feel I've found the right place to reach out x

Hello Peachy and welcome. Have you read through the information for newly diagnosed type 2's on the sticky in the newbie section?

Take things a day at a time, there's plenty you can do to help yourself, but it's a gradual learning process. Have you been given a blood glucose meter to use at home? It's really useful in terms of feeling in control of things, as you can check your BG levels before and 2-3 hours after a meal, and find out what effect different foods have on you. Try not to panic about the background retinopathy, as this is quite common and can improve when you improve your diabetes control. 🙂

Welcome to the forums Peachy 🙂

Thank you everyone I have just got a blood glucose machine after begging the nurse for one. I'm on metformin as well and it's playing havock on my tummy. I've read so much on the site it's been a great help. Just need to sort my eating plan cause I'm scared to eat anything and it's making my bloods bounce around a lot. It's such a lot to learn and I feel like I'm not taking in everything I need to know. Also need to lose a bit of weight all the stress is crazy xx

I was a bit lost off aswell steff. Welcome Peachy. You have joined a good site 🙂

Hello Peachy. Glad you managed to get a meter, it gives you a lot more control. You could try asking the doctor for slow-release metformin, which can reduce the nasty side-effects. I never had to, as they settled down after the first 6 weeks or so.

Eating a lower carb diet will also be beneficial in bringing down your levels. There are swaps you can do, such as using mashed or 'riced' cauliflower instead of potato and rice. Some breads are lower GI than others. Portion control of anything with carbs (not just sugar) is important. For me, joining Slimming World was the best thing I did - the Original/red plan is low carb, and I never had to go hungry!

Thank you for that advice I've been looking up all the foods and stuff. I'll get my head round it all. Everyone on the site is so helpful and lovely xx
