Hi. I'm a newbie, having become a type 1 Diabetic in August last year. I hope I will learn a lot from this forum because at the moment I am just about coping. Unfortunately I had to have my pancreas removed because of cysts along with my duodenum and gall bladder, before that I wasnt diabetic at all, so it's been a steep learning curve. I wonder if there are any members in similar circumstances. Looking forwards to reading about how other people cope. Annie.

Hi Annie

I'm not in the same boat at all - but there are at least two members of the forum who are. One is called Potter Susan and I'm afraid I can't recall the other's name.

However, if you were to search for posts by her, I'm sure you will find stuff of interest. And probably the name of the other person with the similar probs.

Again I could be wrong, but I think they both have an insulin pump now.

Hi Annie, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear what you have been through, but hopefully we will be able to help you with any questions you may have. Nothing is considered 'silly', so if it is confusing or bothering you, please ask!

As TW says, we do have some members who have become diabetic in similar circumstances, so hopefully they will be around to share their experiences with you. What insulin regime are you on, and are there any particular difficulties you are encountering? Has an insulin pump been considered for you? Pumps give very fine control and can make diabetes much more manageable in your situation - if you're not sure what they are all about I would recommend having a browse of the INPUT site:

http://www.input.me.uk/

I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which explains all aspects of living with diabetes in a clear and accessible manner.

I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi there and welcome to the forum......

Its interesting when someones has their pancreas removed as the pancreas has other functions as well......

Like releasing glucagon to stimulate the liver to release glucose, when hypo or in the morning (dawn phenomenon.)

I would imagine these functions are gone now as well?

No advice just more questions/discussion.......sorry.....:(

Thanks

Thank you Trophywench, Northerner and Novorapidboi26 for your kind welcome. Its good to know I can now get in touch with people who understand. Northerner, you asked about my my insulin regime - well, I take 10 units Lantus Glargine in the morning and Humalog as per carbs. I get lots of digestive problems and takes loads of Creon enzymes. I asked my DSN today if I could be considered for a pump she said she wouldnt rule it out but that it might make me anxious, she has reduced my Lantus today to 9 because she thinks its reducing my BG too much in the night. In answer to Novorapidboi26 my supply of Glucogon has gone now, I rely on testing in the night, I wake often anyway. Thanks Trophywrench for giving me the info about members similar to me, I am going to do a search now.
