Hi, my son dx in July 2010, he is 4 yrs old and has an older sister, age 7. We started off on twice daily insulatard and are now on Humulin m3 in the morning and humulin s at tea time with carb counting and adjusting for that teatime dose (just started this a week ago).

Re carb counting - so far so good apart from a potential scary thing with some baked beans! He went hypo from 15 b4 tea (lucky he was) down to 3.3 an hour later 😱 ! Next time I shall only carb count half the value as they are a very slow burn carb (he woke up next morning at 16 - very slow burn!). Bit annoyed tbh that the dietician didnt warn us about this, presume pasta dishes will have the same effect - will treat with caution!

Wecome to the forum LouiseB 🙂

Hi Louise welcome to the forum, theres a great set of parents on here who do a fantastic job also the parents section on here will be well worth a look hun x

Welcome to the forum, if I was to have a full tin of beans I would assume 10g/1unit..........otherwise I would disregard as background/mixed dose should take care of it.....:D

Hi Louise! Welcome to the forum. Carb counting is a lot to get your head around at first but gets much easier with time 🙂

Pasta can take hours to digest fully so yes - it is one you will have to try and work out what works for you in terms of giving insulin.

Have you joined the Children With Diabetes UK emailing list? It's an amazing resource of hundreds of parents who email each other on a daily basis (you send an email to a central email, which sends it out to everyone on the list). Definitely the right place to be if you have a child and have lots of questions!
