Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
I’m new to the community! My name is Josh (He/Him) (24M) Diagnosed with type 2, 3 months ago. Currently taking 2, 1000mg tablets of metformin a day. Massively changed my diet and alcohol consumption and I’m pleased to say I’m feeling much better than I did pre-diagnosis.

The main reason I joined the community is because I’m a master’s student at Middlesex University looking for fellow type 2 diabetics to be research participants for my dissertation project. My research focus is the cognitive changes in memory and emotional processing that is associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). I made a post in the general discussion board about this and would love for you to check it out and perhaps comment and interact with my poll!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post! If any of you have any general tips for a newly diagnosed diabetic it would be awesome to hear from you too.

Kind regards,
Josh

I think you need to factor in the usual reaction of GPs to diagnosing diabetes, the statin and Metformin.
I found it impacted massively on my wellbeing to be explosively incontinent and having my memory dissolving day by day. I ached and wept for months even after throwing the tablets in the bin. Even after getting normal blood glucose the effects of the medication were affecting my everyday life.

Welcome to the forum @JmCordy99

You might find this page helpful, which outlines the process for inviting forum members to participate in research projects.

In order to post your research project you’ll need to have got it to a stage where you have Ethics Committee approval from your university or college.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Great to hear you’ve made such a positive start and are feeling so much better. Well done!

Thanks @everydayupsanddowns ! I’m in the process of sorting out the ethics application. I spoke with your colleague @Josh DUK and he gave me all the info you directed me too! I appreciate you letting me know nonetheless. Thanks for the warm welcome also. @Drummer thanks for sharing some useful insights on your experience. I’m hoping that this time next year my research will have made a little contribution to a better understanding of these issues that people like you and I are facing.

No worries @JmCordy99 - apologies for the duplication, I didn’t check the forum inbox until after I’d replied to you on the forum, so missed the conversation you’d already been having!

Happy to help with this once approval received

Hi and welcome from me too.

Good to hear you are planning on doing some research around how our thinking processes are affected by diabetes.... and I note you seem to be particularly interested in Type 2 diabetes although high and indeed low BG levels can impact our mental processes regardless of Type...... Talking of which, you are incredibly young to be diagnosed with Type 2, at 24. Did they do tests to rule out Type 1 or just assume Type 2? And if they did do tests, do you know which ones? The reason I ask is that some clinicians have very little knowledge and understanding of Type 1 and assume you must be Type 2 if you are not a child.... especially if you have a poor diet as I am guessing many students do. Sadly many people are misdiagnosed as Type 2 when they are actually Type 1 and in adulthood, Type 1 sometimes develops more slowly, so can look like Type 2 and will in many cases initially respond to changes in lifestyle and/or Type 2 meds.

Would you mind telling us about how your diagnosis came about? It sounds like you were feeling a bit rough, so I am guessing you had symptoms? Did they come on suddenly or was it building up for quite a while?
There is of course no obligation to tell us your story but I would hate to think that you were Type 1 rather than Type 2 and you ended up really ill as a result and I didn't say something.

I would also hate for you to do a dissertation specifically on Type 2 because you were diagnosed when it turns out you might actually be Type 1.
