Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I was diagnosed a month ago but have just found this site - I think I was in denial at first. Within a couple of weeks I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and under active thyroid! So from feeling absolutely fine I now feel a bit grim on loads of tablets each day. I have struggled with the side effects of Metformin so have today been switched to Glucophage SR - a bit confused as they seem to be the same basic drug. Have ordered a meter but currently feeling a bit 'out of control' . I have given up alcohol (only used to drink a glass of wine with dinner but doc said not a good idea), tried to eliminate as much sugar as possible and cut back on carbs. So far I have lost some weight but still feel achy/abdominal pain etc. If anyone could help with advice on any aspect of diet I'd be really grateful, thanks in anticipation.

Hi "Hammy" & welcome 🙂. You sound if you are doing the right things straight away. Keep at it cos I have a friend who is now off all meds & is no longer T2. Good luck

Hi Purplehamster, welcome to the forum 🙂 I felt much the same at my diagnosis, went from feeling reasonably fit and healthy to a walking wreck with diabetes, suspected heart attack and 11 different pills to take each day 😱 But after a while it starts to make sense and once you get to grips with things you will hopefully start to feel much better - possibly much better, since before this you may not have known you had diabetes for a while!

The key thing is to educate yourself. Have a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and get yourself a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker and they will set you up well for what to expect and how best to handle things. Ideally, you need to be testing with a home blood glucose meter to find out how different food affects your blood sugar levels, so it's good to see you have ordered a meter 🙂 Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S for a guide to efficient testing.

Good that you have moved onto the Glucophage, hope you have a better experience with it 🙂 Please feel free to ask any questions!

Welcome to the forum Purplehamster 🙂

Welcome Hamster. You will get the hang of it all. I was the same as you, never took tablets and was never ill...suddenly im a Diabetic with high blood pressure! Its a lot to get your head round to start off with but I promise it gets easier 🙂

Welcome to the forum, Purplehamster.

Glucophage SR does have the same active ingredient - metformin, but as it is Slow Release (due to coating of tablet), it is less likely to cause gastric symptoms as regular metformin. Many people also find that taking metformin with food and limiting carbohydrate intake also reduce gastric symptoms.

Hi Purplehamster, welcome to the forum, you sound like you are doing really well but there will be loads of info and help on here for you....Tintin

I have also been diagnosed with type 2 and a slightly under active thyroid. I am currently not on medication for either, the GP wants to deal with the diabeties first. I personally am finding it difficult to unpick which symptoms may be from which condition. I have aching legs and feet, I have just had my first foot screen which resulted in no problems so I assume this is my thyroid, as is the hair loss I think. It is difficult because the symptoms of both are similar.

Welcome to the forum, purplehamster, as everyone has said, it is all a shock at first and feels really weird to be suddenly medicalised. Wishing you all the best with your great start 🙂
