I have had T2DM for more than 20 years and have progressed to insulin which I have been using for about 12 years. The weight has piled on, as expected, and I am now trying to get rid of it and come off insulin and other diabetes meds forever. Using 36 hour intermittent fasting 3 days per week which has been helpful in achieving weight loss. Reduced long-acting levemir by 50% reduced weight by 10kg in 4 months and also reduced waist circumference. No longer obese (BMI down to 27.4 from >31). Had a stroke last year which concentrated the mind somewhat. Interested in chatting to others who are trying IF and how they are coping with it.
Welcome to the forum
I'm not sure if anyone is trying IF, most T2 appear to look at carb control and find that with carb reduction weight also drops (some actively diet in addition to carb reduction to reduce weight). Please note that altering carbs will also alter the insulin required and I know next to nothing about this. However there will be someone who could answer any questions you may have regarding that.
What was your HbA1c? And is levemir the only diabetes med you are taking?
Congratulations on your weight loss so far! And great to hear that your waist circumference has reduced, and that you’ve been able to reduce your Levemir dose 🙂
Several members have used significant calorie restriction as a means of dropping weight, and aiming to clear visceral fat around the organs in the abdomen - approaches like the Newcastle diet, and NHS Path to Remission programme. I think some have also used IF as an element of that.
Others have aimed for remission by reducing their carbohydrate intake to a level which their metabolism can accommodate, and then adjusted as their weight reduced and a maintenance menu could be developed.
There are various remission stories in the Remission section here:
