Relationship to Diabetes

Hi There,

Another Newbie I'm afraid!!

I was diagnosed type 2 3 years ago by accident really. I was having blood tests for fertility problems and the GP did a 'blood audit' and found I had a high reading on the random glucose blood test. So I had to have a couple of fasting blood tests to confirm it was diabetes. It was a shock to the ole system and at the time just seemed to be one of many issues I had to contend with as well as being diagnosed with PCOS and other gynae related issues. I was immediately was put onto Metformin and decided to go onto a low GI diet. I have to admit I was more concerned about my fertility issues rather than my diabetes and did this to give me a good start on IVF treatment. The diabetes thing was just a hindrance in my eyes, and didn't really understand what it all meant as I didn't really get the support at the time...and I guess I was in denial! :( Anyways.. the IVF didn't work so I'm trying hard to get my levels sorted to get a more positive result!

This time i'm seeing a DSN for preconception advice and have been put on insulin to control my levels better. It's still a bit erratic and I know it's going to take time to get my medication/levels right before i'm given the 'green light' to start again! *fingers crossed*

Anyhoo... that's me in a nutshell. i hope to talk to likeminded people who maybe going through the fertility rollercoaster too.

Thank you for reading my post! 🙂

Hi Sillymoo, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sure you will find lots of people here to share your experiences with. What insulin are you on, and what was your latest HbA1c?

Not going through the fertility stuff myself, but just popping in to say the people on here are lovely and I'm sure you will find plenty of people to catch up with.
Hello!

Hi Northener... My last HbA1c was 7.7% and i've been put on Insulatard twice a day and Novorapid with meals as well as taking 2g of Metformin a day.

Thank you... Violetrose! 🙂

Hopefully the insulin will help get your levels down a bit then. Have you been taught how to count carbs so you can match your insulin doses to the carb content of your food? If not, there are quite a few resources that can help - there is an online course at http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/ and a lot of people find the Carbs & Cals book or app very handy, especially if you are eating out.

Welcome to the forums Sillymoo 🙂

Hopefully you can get support to get your HbA1c down a bit to help you. We have been through the IVF treadmill so I?m not going to use the normal platitudes that tended to annoy me lots 😉

At the risk of having a virtual object thrown at me :D, how is your weight since I know that can impact on IVF.

Welcome aboard SM 🙂

Northerner....I've heard of carb counting but don't know anything about it or how to use it. At the moment i've just been given a set amount of insulin to inject each time. Some days it's good some days it's not so good. Maybe carb counting is the way forward. I'll certainly have a look at the website..Thank you xxx

Mark T... Haha, It's OK, I'm getting used to all the platitudes that surround it all! 😉 my current BMI is 26. I seem to have put on a little weight since injecting but plan to shift some to get it down a bit...although that's proving to be a little harder these days :( any tips more than welcome!! 😱

Thank you Sazzaroo!

Actually that's very good. Your lighter then my wife was when we started our last IVF cycle :D

I believe an inflexible insulin regime won't be helping you to keep you weight down.

I guess it's not too bad, although everything seems to read like a school report at the moment 'could do better!' :D Yep, I've heard insulin regime can make you put on weight. What a bummer! :(

Welcome to the forum Sillymoo 🙂

Hi Sillymoo welcome from another Moo! Welcome to the boards- everyone is really friendly here and hopefully others can help with the IVF. If you do want any tips on getting your BMI down (though 26 is certainly not shabby) the weightloss section on this forum is a brilliant source 😉
