Hi, I'm Terry - in my 50s Type 1 since 2002 - my nurse is suggesting metformin might help my control - can only find Type 2 info re the drug - anyone else Type 1 and using metformin?

Hi Terry, welcome to the forum 🙂 We do have members who are on metformin and Type 1 - some people have a degree of insulin resistance as well as a poorly performing pancreas so the metformin helps to overcome this.

Hi Terry

Why does she think Met will help, do you have insulin resistance? Have you put on weight or something?

What problems are you actually having with your BG control ?

Welcome to the forums Terry 🙂

Teryy hi and a a warm welcome to the forum

Hi Terry,
welcome to the forum 🙂

The question has to be why is your control not good?
Have you had any education at all in how to manage your diabetes?

Hi Terry.

My sister is also type 1 & on insulin & metformin. I understand it can help with insulin resistance...she has had issues with that so they are seeing if it will help. I don't know much about how they tweak it though I'm afraid... best of luck with it. 🙂

Thanks all - my HbA1c has been just over 8.0 (so 64/66 mmol) - I know this is not ideal but was signed off by the diabetic centre to my doctor's care at this without going onto metformin having been mentioned. I've just had another blood test so this may have changed. I'm thinking I may have got a bit lapse in my exercise/counting carbs although general blood testing results have been as before - so we'll see.

Are you on basal/bolus (aka MDI) Tez?

How long since you did fasting tests to see if your basal requirement has changed , and have you been on a formal carb counting course?
