Hello everyone I’m 3 years in and since Xmas I’ve been struggling with management. I can’t seem to be consistent at all - currently after several weeks of great readings I currently can’t get below 11 it doesn’t move and I’m feeling so flat about it.!I know I can do it but feel so alone.

Hi Kirstie, sorry to hear that. What insulin regime are you on (MDI or pump, when was the last time you adjusted your doses of insulin) and has anything whatever in your life changed since before Xmas?

I’m in novorapid and toujeo I’m on the libre. I’m thinking my nighttime might need to change ie increase to stable during day just awaiting advice from dr. I’m dyslexic with figures which doesn’t help but I’m sure I’m right that going high early morning then again during day I want to sort. I count carbs and can’t see where I’m going wrong there so thought it best to start with night time. I tend to find if I can go to bed between 6-7 reading - I go through night pretty well. If higher then I might come down then go high before waking up.

When you say “after several weeks”, how many weeks would that be?
I ask because, it is common for our periods to send our blood sugars haywire.

I’m menopausal the last 2 weeks have been all over the place I normally range between 7-9 in my readings I’ve been as high as 14 and had one low.

Hi Kirstieb, welcome to the.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling to manage your diabetes. Hormones can have a big impact on our blood sugar numbers so it may be that.

I’m glad that you’re speaking with your doctor about this as it may mean your medication needs adjusting which I’m sure they’ll help with.

Just out of curiosity have these problems coincided with you getting the Covid vaccine as my basal insulin needs have doubled since getting the vaccine (AZ). I had a few days after each jab where things were a bit erratic up and down and then I steadily needed to increase my basal insulin over a period of weeks. It happened with both the first and second jab. I was on 16 units of Levemir and I am now needing 35!

Hope you get some help sorting your dose but it is likely basal insulin testing and adjustment that you need.

Welcome to the forum @Kirstieb

Sorry to hear of the difficulties that you are having with your levels at present. I am not sure that any of us achieve consistency, especially as we have to juggle so many different factors. However it is off putting when you think that you have it sorted and then it goes awry again.

As you mentioned it is good to get your basal rates sorted first Then focus on the other factors. Like @rebrascora my levels went haywire after my COVID Vaccine in both occasions but then settled.
I hope that your team are able to help you with changes to help settle things.

I’ve been advised to raise basal and to focus on my mornings get that settled and I should be able to keep the rest of day level. However I get up at 530 and take 2 units then make my breakfast which is 20g and I have a 1:3 ratio I’m still struggling with a massive spike i had been taking 8 units to trial to see if that extra unit would help but it doesn’t touch it I tend to rise to 16 - do I add more or hope over 4 hrs I level out?

When do you inject your bolus for breakfast?
Many of us find that the pre bolus timing needs to be much longer at breakfast time than the rest of the day. I need to inject as much as 45 mins in advance with Fiasp and over an hour if I am using NovoRapid. Others find 30 mins works well for them. Perhaps increase the timing of the bolus by 5 mins each day until you find the timing that works best for you and the breakfast you choose.

How long is there between the 2u and the breakfast insulin? Why not just take breakfast insulin when you take the 2u? I have to prebolus by 45 minutes for breakfast.

I might try this as took two units at 530 this morning and by 9 was reading twelve - had been hoping to get to 930 before taking breakfast insulin

Sorry to hear what a tough time you are having juggling all the factors that can affect your BG recently @Kirstieb

T1 diabetes can be a fickle and frustrating houseguest, with perhaps 42 different factors that can affect your levels!

I agree that looking at your basal insulin and getting that adjusted properly is a really good first step.

There’s a good write-up of how to systematically check your basal insulin dose here:

It can sound a bit overwhelming to take on, but once you have your basal dose adjusted more or less right, you usually only need to tweak it slightly going forwards. 🙂

If your breakfast is at 9:30 then I would not take the breakfast insulin at 5:30. I would only do this if I was able to eat breakfast within an hour of taking insulin, and I would gradually change the time of breakfast to find out what time it worked best for me.

Today I seem to be high was fine this morning at 11am I was reading 10 so took 3 units and at 1.45 I’m reading 14 - I must admit I’m very hot from housework - do you think that’s the cause - I’m going to take another correction dose

What times did you eat and what did you eat?

Ate breakfast 15 carbs did have a coffee in hairdressers and was super hot but I came down to 6 but an hour later I’m at 10
