Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Ii have been reading a lot of info off this site , and to be honest I am still a bit stuck and confused.

I found out in April 2020 I was diabetic type 2, I had lots og symptoms but it was when my eye site started to go blury I decided to get an eye test , and ended up with new glasses and due to the optician doing a few more checks she sent me to the dr ad I I ad cotton spots on my one eye, also the retina was becoming thin. So then after blood tests they told me I have a HBA1C of 118 at the time, so went big time on cutting everything out not down. Also they put me on 500MG metformin twice daily so not a high level after reading others on here. Never had a follow up so swapped Dr's after moving and had more tests after a year and I have got my HBA1c down do 42. So the diabetes nurse says thats brilliant , but they also put me on statins due to my age.

So all sounds good, BUT I got some weird symptoms now, I was during the yeat checking my blood pre food and 2.5 hours after food and really working hard on the sugar levels and working out what was good and bad, the nurse told me to stop doing the testing as I admit my fingers began to feel like a tree frog and wouldnt blead so easy on the pin prick. The worry I have is I am having a few weird symptoms of the odd light headed episode or the odd feeling zapped out. Is this normal , would you go back to a more regierous testing as I stopped all together at the request of the nurse. I was even thinking of getting one of the devices that tests all the time. Or am I being stupid, I dont really know what to do so any advice is appreciated.

The zapped out is ther weird one , its like a mega sudden powerful feeling of being tired , very very strong. I was a terrible sleeper before I was diagnosed.

Welcome to the forum @JustDrew

Thanks for sharing your story with us, sounds like you’ve made some great progress and some really positive changes.

Feeling a bit lightheaded and spaced out, and also fatigue and tiredness can be symptoms of either high or low blood glucose. But they could equally be caused by all sorts of other things! Do you still have in-date strips so that you can check what your levels are like when these feelings come on?

I took Atorvastatin for a few weeks and thought that I was destined for a care home as it affected my brain quite badly - some people can take them and report no problems.
I don't need to test these days as I know what the reaction to various meals will be. I do test from time to time, but rarely, only when I had tried something new.

If your HbA1c is still good, there might be other reasons. I had very weird symptoms when I was put on statins, as did my friend. She reported feeling spaced out and they affected her memory. I tried several different ones, with equally unpleasant side effects, and in the end had to come off them. Like Drummer I only test now when having new foods. And I also monitor my carb intake very closely. How is your blood pressure? I am careful when getting up, as I can feel light headed if I move too quickly. Perhaps you should get it checked, or ask for a phone consult with your GP surgery. Best wishes

I have tested the odd time i felt a bit odd and sugars been OK, do you still test daily as tempted to go back to testing just my fingers swell up like a tree frog if I go back to the pre post food checks etc again so was tempted to try a freestyle libre 2 for a month , but i have to admit I had completely forgotten about the statin tablets. I was thinking of the libre 2 as a more accurate check constantly, if they remain OK then , now you reminded me to drop the statin tablets. Just I used to use the accucheck mobile and even with the prick depth thing on 3 it would not always bleed or there was more water in the drop as my body reacted to the testing and swoll the tips of fingers as a reaction with like water fluid etc.

Welcome to the forum @JustDrew.

Good job reducing your HbA1c, you seem to be managing your diabetes really well.

It would be best getting in touch with your GP if you're worried about your symptoms. Hope you can get these resolved soon. 🙂
