Hi there,
I need some advice. I've recently moved to the UK and I need help in figuring out the healthcare system and how best to take care of myself. I am a Type 1 Diabetic and although I am very stable, disciplined and in good health, I don't want to end up in trouble if there is an emergency.
In South Africa, I had private medical aid, an endocrinologist who I saw every six months, and a GP for day to day issues. I had a prescription for short- and long-acting insulin, needles and other things, that I would just go to the local pharmacy for, and this was linked to my medical aid fund.
I have so many questions and I don't know who to ask! I don't have a clue where to even begin with the NHS? Should I go onto Bupa or some other private medical aid? What happens if I'm travelling around Europe and something happens and I'm not on private med insurance?
Please please help me. I don't know where to begin.
Thank you so much
Gemma
