Relationship to Diabetes

Hi there

I am very recently diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes. The first lot of metformin had a catastrophic affect on my digestive system so yesterday I started taking metformin SR. All went well digestion wise but now at the ripe old age of 54 I’ve started menstrual bleeding! I can’t find any reliable info via Google and wondered if this is ‘normal’ or should I be pestering the specialist nurse again on Monday?
 
Frankly @Ljchivers - IMHO it's nob all to do with your diabetes - much more to do with your female bits, If you are post menopausal for goodness sake get to the doctors PDQ - it is a definite effect of ovarian cancer - that happened to my mom when she was 70+, and ovarian cancer was the cause.

Please JUST DO IT first thing on Monday! - and tell the GP why !!
 
Hi Ljchivers, welcome to the forum.

So sorry to hear about the issues you've had with your medication. Although digestive issues are common, I haven't heard about menstruation issues with metaformin so I would contact your GP as soon as you can and update them with your concerns.
 
- and exactly why I had my ovaries whipped out when I had to have a hysterectomy because of fibroids since as bleeding from that orifice can frequently be the only outward sign of ovarian cancer, without a womb that symptom cannot happen - so please whip them out at the same time. My female gynaecologist said my reasons were perfectly valid and agreed immediately. (neither of us knew about my endometriosis though until she got in there - and had to stay in there longer than she'd planned for!)
 
Thank you for your prompt responses. Trophywench you have confirmed my suspicions - I was desperately clutching at straws tbh and I will indeed be contacting my GP on Monday. It just seemed a bit of a coincidence that's all but I know metformin is prescribed for other issues, not just diabetes
