Hello everyone,

I'm an "ancient" Type 1 diabetic...had it 30 yrs now (diagnosed at 11 months!) but I still feel like I'm learning! I'm a bit new to message boards etc but it seems a great way to get to chat to other diabetics & maybe bounce ideas off each other...

I'm currently on the DAFNE regime, but due to a nasty Dawn Phenomenon (meaning 0330am "booster" doses nightly) am on the list for a pump - should get it within 6 weeks or so - can't wait! I'm just a bit nervous about the cannula 😱 Any useful tips would be greatly appreciated.

I've experienced a "touch" of kidney problems (combined with Pre Eclampsia whilst pregnant - ouch...) and have had laser surgery for proliferative retinopathy, (which seems ok at the mo) but otherwise, touch wood, I'm still more or less intact! (Albeit knackered from the nighttime doses...)

Looking forward to chatting with you,
Rgds,

Twitchy

Hi Twitchy, welcome to the group! We have lots of new and experienced pumpers posting at the moment, so hopefully you will pick up some tips and be ahead of the game when you get your pump🙂 If I was having to wake up every night for 'boosters' I'd definitely want a pump - good to hear that it won't be too long.

Thanks everyone! It's really nice to find this group!

It's been really good to see other people's experiences. I must confess that the comments from the mums of diabetic kids have been humbling - you're amazing Ladies!! My mum died when I was 13, so I never got the chance to talk to her about her perspective on my diabetes. She was the main carer re the diabetes as such, although Dad did his best she was a nurse so had an advantage bless him! (Plus his injection technique was pants - ouch! He must have practiced on some really tough oranges!)

More seriously, it's only since I've had a child of my own that I realise how much you worry for them & anguish over them (I do, anyway!). For what it's worth, I'm beginning to suspect that my diabetes has always bothered me considerably less than it did my parents! (at least most of the time!) I know that my dad even now frets about it, whereas I can just get on with living with it. Good luck to those of you who are going on to / or are supporting kids as they go onto pumps over the next few weeks - fingers crossed for a smooth transition!🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum, and good luck with the transition to the pump!
