Hi, I have been diagnosed as having pre diabetes. My Mum is type2 and has been for some years as was my Grandma. I would like to reverse this so that I don't go down the same path which I feel is inevitable. I try to avoid bread, pastry, crisps etc, but am finding when I go out say for the day or a lot of walking I feel faint. What do I eat to combat this? However I swim most days for an hour and half and don't suffer from feeling faint after! Any advice.

Hello @Julia P. Welcome to the forum🙂. Sorry you are having trouble when walking,
it sounds as if your BGL (Blood Glucose Levels) are getting a bit low. You will need to
talk with your GP. about this. I would suggest you carry something sweet with you e.g.
jelly babies or even glucose tablets, you only need to take a couple to see if this helps.
I`m afraid the only way to tell is to test your BGL yourself. I`m sure some one more
experienced will come along and give you more advice to help you, kindest regards Ted.

Hi Julia, something I found helpful was to eat little and often, I always carry a small tub of almonds and walnuts as a low carb snack between meals, I also have a few sugar free biscuits as a back up, some people find the sugar free options upset their tummy but I’ve been fine with them. If I’m out all day then I take a sandwich of Burgen bread with ham and cheese. Another great snack idea is celery with cream cheese. Do you check your blood glucose?

Hi Julia

Welcome to the forum.

It is good to hear that you are managing such a strong exercise regime, and this can help with the management of your diabetes. There is a lot to learn at the start but this may be easier with other family members having some experience of Diabetes. Many people on here with T2 have recommended the book: Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker.

It is sometimes difficult to compare the impact of different sports as the level of effort may vary. Are you testing your blood glucose levels during exercise? Many with T2 are not able to get test strips from the GP but choose to purchase these and then use their kit to find out about how their body reacts to different foods and exercise. If you do go down this route, many on here choose to use the
SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50.

Do keep in touch and keep asking questions. There is a wealth of experience on here and people are very happy to help.

Welcome to the Forum. I am pre-diabetic too. I did get out of it but it has gone back up again, unfortunately, so I am battling on. Testing is very important as what suits one person does not suit another.

Since joining here and being more careful about what I eat I am enjoying my food more in all honesty. There are some lovely recipes on this site.

Dr Michael Moseley's Blood Sugar Diet and Blood Sugar Diet Recipes have some good ideas as does Dr David Cavan's book "Reverse your Diabetes" - he does not mean literally, he means maintains better control. I find Tom Kerridge's Dopamine Diet book helpful but some find the recipes a bit long winded. There are lots of good books out there with lovely recipes in if you like cooking.
