Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, I was diagnosed with Type 2 in November and I am still confused about the whole situation and also feel I haven't got a great deal of support from my Medical Centre. I am stil coming to terms with things and working out what foods / drinks will do me more harm than good. Not having a sweet tooth or one for sugary fuzzy drinks will work in my favour but its less things to 'give up' or 'cut down on' the same applies to Alcohol or Smoking too I guess as I don't partake in those either.

Unfortunately it is not uncommon that the medical centres and GP's leave you with the feeling of little or no support. It would be nice to say here is a list of what you can and can't eat, but will all react to foods differently and what may suit one person is a no no for some one else.

Things like white bread, rice are generally bad for all of us as they are full of quick acting carbs which raise our glucose very rapidly. If you post what you generally eat people can give you their opinions on what they find good or bad for them. One thing to look for in all foods is the total carb content including sugars, the higher the % the worse it is for us.

Welcome! I'm new to all this too. As Pav says, unfortunately there isn't a "one size fits all" diet solution to diabetes control and that is immensely frustrating! Are you testing your levels at home? If not then you may find it helpful to invest in a monitor (unless your GP will supply one). Most of us use the SD Code Free as the testing strips are reasonably affordable. I've found self testing invaluable in sorting out how different foods affect me - some real surprises! If you haven't already done so, have a look as well at some of the links for newbies at the top of this section - great advice from real experts (ie. those who live with it!). Good luck.
