Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm 63 and 16stones 1pound. I don't think I'm diabetic. I have two sisters. We're like Russian dolls. I don't think we're anything alike but people often get us confused. The last time I was at the docs he was in a bit of a panic. My stats must have been in disarray because he took a photo of my feet and stuff! I was supposed to have had an overnight blood pressure test but they've not got round to this yet. He begged me to 'come back' and I thought maybe this is serious. I've had high blood pressure for years, am on meds. I've had chest pain in the past and have tablets for under the tongue but really they were always saying there was nothing wrong with me. They gave me betablockers decades ago, which I have a feeling may have now caused heart failure so instead of curing me they gave me the thing I was most scared of! My tum measures 50inches around and no matter how hard I try to stick to the Atkins it won't go down. I'm scared now. I have been measuring my blood with my sisters' blood monitor. She doesn't use it, she's in total denial and has had a heart attack this year and is now quite poorly imho. My other sister has now been diagnosed diabetic and is also in denial. They're eating all kinds of baddies ie boiled sweets, cakes etc. The highest my bloods have been as far as I know is 8.8 after I had canned corned beef. I shan't be having that again! I have an appointment with the nurse next month. How would they be able to tell if I'm diabetic or not? I really need to know.

Hi Ditto , welcome to the forum .
Some of our experienced members will no doubt give you their opinions very soon. My doctor diagnosed me by taking a blood sample as I was generally feeling unwell , symptoms were severe thirst , fatigue , and visiting toilet alot . I would think if your doctor had any queries about you having diabetes they wIill take a blood sample ,sorry I can't be of more help but as I already said someone will reply to you on this forum shortly

I forgot the point I was making! I waffle on so. When I was at the docs and he was taking a photo of my feet/lower legs and generally fussing he said "You are diabetic aren't you?" I thought he was telling me I was diabetic. Now I'm wondering if he got me mixed up with my sisters. I shall ask the nurse/other doc next month at my appointments. I hope I'm not diabetic. I think I'm just pre-diabetic so maybe I've got time to turn it around.

Thank you for the replies. I did have a test ages ago, where you wait around the hospital for hours after you've taken a sweet drink. I wasn't diabetic that time. I don't have any of those symptoms apart from having to nap in the afternoons and my memory is not so great but there again I am aged. 😉

Hi as said in previous post by Grovesy ,a blood test would have been taken and you should be told by the following week if you are diabetic .

Need to ask for that then when I see the Nurse. Put my mind at rest either way.

Some people have online access to GP services and some include test results. If you have you could look.

We have trouble seeing our GPs at all, I shouldn't think I'd be able to get online access. I will try though just for interest sake. 🙂

Edit
I Googled and I was so intrigued to see that you can do stuff online. I shall ask at my appointment. You need photo id and stuff. Might be worth the hassle to keep abreast of medications and info. Thanks for that.

My surgery have only recently gone online but not all of the services are available. All doctors were supposed have online services for patients by April of this year.
In the last week I have found making an appointment on line useful, making 3 on the day appointments in the early hours. I heard a receptionist telling someone that the some appointments are released overnight. It saved me trying to ring. Two of the appointment were with my Doctor of choice, the other I took with another.
