Relationship to Diabetes
As a 46 yo male with a mother who had/has type 2 l have been concerned about diabetes. l currently am being treated for high uric acid, for about 30 months, l havent had a flare in almost three years. Currently go to the gym for cardio 4 times a week and have lost 3 stone, with 2 or 3 still to go. l have a couple of questions, if l may. l have had my bloods checked by my doctor, initally due to potential high cholesterol level that was picked up by the optician. The cholesterol was 6.1 now 5.1. My uric acid levels were normal and he said my blood sugars were fine. Sounds good. However, and it might be nothing related, l was sent a free one touch glucose meter recently and have used it for a few days. l have checked the fasting level, first thing, as being 4.8-5.8 and 2 hours after eating as being 5.8-5.9. Can anyone shed some light onto these figures. The issue that may be irrelevant is for along time, but more noticeable this past 6 weeks, l have pain from my elbows down the front and into the hands and from the knees down front and rear. The pain can be described as tingling, burning. l also get it from the temples round the back of the head and down to the base of the neck. I find myself having to rub these areas. Having never spoken to anyone with diabetes l dont know the fallout or how it affects the body. l have read some but now tend not to believe everything l find on google. l will be speaking with my doctor in due course as these pains are driving me nuts with no otc medication helping. Thanks in advance.

Hi Welcome.
Those figures seem absolutely fine to me, so I wouldn't be worrying about having Diabetes or even pre Diabetes atm.
As for your other symptoms sorry I can't help , the best person to help would be the GP.

Those are good figures! Don't know about the arms, but the legs you can get something called shin splints that radiates down the front !

Hi DB, welcome to the forum....

I can only speak to the BG levels but they look fine, however, you do have T2 in your genes so it's as well to monitor your BG levels every so often (particularly if you are feeling off). One thing that us diabetics do (that will have a benefit for you overall) is monitor our diets, reducing carbs, eating less processed foods, more leafy vegetables, quality food (organic where possible).

Thanks for the replies and l appreciate the comments. lm not sure if there is T2 in my genes, dysfunctional family so no chance of finding out there atm. l tend to give process foods a wide berth, but guilty of bacon and sausages on a sunday and the odd bit cheese. There must be something else going on l need to get looked at.

I think that you will find that a lot of us don't particularly pay into this low fat thing, particularly as many of us have improved cholesterol with reduced carbs & increased good fats.

Hiyer, Bacon and sausages are not baddies as far as diabetes is concerned, though the better quality sausage are better. Eggs and cheese are ok too.
This has made me hungry , now where's me frying pan, yup you've guessed it fats are not the baddies that we've been told they are for many years either 🙂
