Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with Type II diabetes, this only came about through blood tests for my ?High Blood pressure? which only came about due to me having a ?laugh? on a ?health monitor all in one station? provided by a health company at work, who were trying to sell private health care.
My doctor has been fantastic and I have all my appointments set up to see the various Diabetic specialists at the surgery and have been put on Metformin tablets.
I saw the Diabetic nurse yesterday and obviously one of the major things I need to change is my diet; I have lost a few stones before with Weight Watchers, so my question is; with type II diabetes can I start back on Weight watchers or is it not advised.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear that you are getting good care from your team, something that is often lacking. Have you been issued with a blood testing meter so that you can measure the effects of adjustments to your diet and activity levels? If not, I would highly recommend requesting one - have a read of Jennifer's Advice, Maggie Davey's letter and Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to get an idea of how you can approach getting your levels under control quickly and efficiently. I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - the more you understand about your diabetes, the easier it will be to gain good control and minimise its effect on your life.

Many of our members have used WW to ehlp them lose weight, so I don't see anything wrong in continuing. What you will need to do though is bear in mind that some options may be healthy for the general non-diabetic populace, but not ideal for people with diabetes (many fruits, for example, are high sugar and will have a big effect on blood sugar levels). A useful guide to eating in a 'diabetes-friendly' way is to follow a low Glycaemic Index/Glycaemic Load diet - The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction to the principles. It's not a weight-loss diet, but a method of eating that will have a slow and steady effect on your blood sugars 🙂

Please ask any questions you may have - everyone is really friendly and knowledgeable and happy to help!

Thanks for the warm welcome, i have had a look at Gretchen's book on Amazon and just reading the preview pages it seems an excellent buy, so will be getting myself a copy very soon. Thanks for the advice on WW, not much of a 'sweet' person, though one of the great low point pudding options was a couple of meranigues with a tin of fruit on top - so i can kiss that pudding good bye 🙂

I tried WW many years ago, long before diabetes. It didn't suit me then, but may have changed. I've had a good weight loss with Slimming World (4.5 stone in 2012). SW is hugely flexible with lots of diabetes-friendly options. I'm not the only SW member using this forum - have a browse through the weight loss threads.

Welcome and Good Luck! Always good to here of people getting their diabetes sorted out before it's started causing them a problem, ie when you're still feeling quite healthy! :0)

Welcome to the forum Steve 🙂
