I have two children with type 1 diabetes, both diagnosed in their teens. They are 19 years and 15 years old. I am happy to share my knowledge and experiences of living with diabetes and teenagers🙂

Hi Magonlia14. Welcome 🙂

I would imagine you have had a few 'fun' times over the years.:D

How long have they both been diagnosed ?

And what sort of insulin regime are they on (and do they do as they're told?!:D) 🙂

Rob

Welcome to the site..............

I too have a sibling with type 1, he was diagnosed when he was 2, and myself 15......

Do you find your children have become closer now they share something none of the rest of the family have?

Hi magnolia, welcome to the forum 🙂 Were they diagnosed close together? How have they been coping with it? I'm sure your experiences will be very valuable to our members 🙂

Hi Rob

My daughter was diagnosed when she was 15 just before taking her GCSE's. My son was diagnosed at 13 years, almost 2 years to the day later! My daughter had great control to start with, but these last couple of years have not been so good for her, especially since starting university. My son on the other hand has excellent control, they are like chalk and cheese! They are both on the same basal bolus 4 injections a day and levemir at night🙂

Thanks for the warm welcome....they were close before diabetes came along! But it does help them understand and support each other.

Thanks for the warm welcome. My daughter was diagnosed 3 years and 9 months ago and my son diagnosed 21 months ago. It has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but they cope pretty well on the whole. My daughter has been struggling over the last 2 years particularly since starting university. My son has great control. I try to be a positive, supportive parent for them, but can't deny it is difficult at times.

There's a couple of members who are at or have been recently through uni and have had problems with erratic living arrangements or moving between GPs, etc.

Pleased that they support each other. It's us younger siblings who are the sensible ones :D

Is there anything specific that your daughter is struggling with ?

Rob
