I have been hovering around this site for a few days, but after having a check-up today feel in need of a bit of support and this looks to be the place for that - though I hope that I can be a support too in time.

Since being diagnosed in December 2010 I have been on Metformin and vowed to make myself a project to get fit and eat well, but that has gradually drifted and I'm heavier than I was when I started and feel leaden and weary. So it was not a surprise to find my blood pressure, liver results, Hba1 were bad..but cholest is 4.0 & kidney function okay.
So the bottom line is that I need to lose weight or get worse and more medicated, which I don't want.

So any ideas on planning my exercise and food regime will be avidly read - I am a veggie, doin't like gyms but like swimming, walking and yoga.
My partner is trying his best to be supportive, and is, but it's hard to explain how depressing and scary this all is.
All the best

Hi happy feet you have come to the right place but I am afraid i am not the best one to help you with your diet or excesses I hate the gym but like you love walking and floating around.
I have always fancied yoga is it good?
I am sure before to long you will get loads of help of folk at least you have recognized that you have a problem that must be a good first step.

Hi Happy feet, welcome to the forum 🙂 Great that you are feeling so motivated - we'll try our best to help you achieve your aims! 🙂 Probably one of the best things to start with is keeping a food diary, recording carbs, protein, fat and calories. It can be a little tedious at times, but it's the best way to spot patterns or areas where you might reduce something or substitute a healthier alternative. We all think we know what we eat, but it can be quite surprising when you actually write it all down and review it!

Swimming is an excellent activity and should really help to keep your blood sugar levels stable and in range. You need to be able to do it regularly though, or combine with brisk walks of 30 mins or more so that you are getting active every day. Weight loss can be slow, but that's not the only aim - feeling fitter and healthier even if the pounds are slow to come off is a huge benefit and will make you even more motivated. We have a weight loss section here that you can post your goals and achievements on - and don't forget the NSVs, or non-scale victories, things like people noticing you looking better, or losing inches, clothes becoming loose etc.! 🙂 The exercise will really help with your blood pressure too.

Good luck, and do let us know what you plan to do and how you are getting on with it! 🙂

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi Happyfeet, Welcome 🙂

I would also say that swimming and walking could be your best route to weight loss and fitness, along with the food diary.

Hiya

If doing summat in a group might motivate you the British Heart Foundation have groups who go walking - all sorts of walking from the can barely take a few steps to 10 mile+ yomps !

Also T'ai Chi - if you like yoga you might also like that.

Welcome to the forum Happy feet you have come to the right place for help and support. Swimming and walking will be great exercise. Up till a month ago I would of agreed with you about the gym but am now involved in a programme called new life new you which is run by local gov and nhs and now go to 2 gym sessions and one fitness class a week and am really enjoying it. Only been going for about 4 weeks but already making a differentce.

Thank you all for such a warm welcome.

And I am also starting to act on your advice, have 2 little notebooks one for eating/food planning journal and the other for my exercise plans.

Menu planning and shopping this morning, walking later when the rain eases. I joined a local hotel's health club and plan to swim every second day and build up my time and lengths as I go so will have some targets to aim for. As for yoga, my old teacher starts new classes in Sept but have 2 of her CDs of her wonderful soothing voice instructing through some movements.
If it's properly taught and you don't get competitive I have found it helps me relax and beat stress and get supple...but haven't done it for a few years and am creaking a bit so gently does it. Will join in the weight loss forum.
Thank you all again

Welcome Happyfeet! good luck with the exercise plans, I love swimming too and keep meaning to get back into it, unfortunately my local pool is a bit expensive :( I love your name by the way :D
