Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
🙄Just want to introduce myself. diagnosed type 2 a couple of weeks ago and still a bit shell shocked. Trying to get to grips with diet and glucose and cholestral levels and also trying to get my fella to understand it all - I guess I could describe him as a lovable cave dweller (sorry fellas, meant in the best possible way)
Never done this forum thing before either, but feeling a bit lost and disorientated, and need some support from others who have been through something similar.
So, heres to new friends!!

Hi sugar and welcome to the forum hun, are you on diet and exercise are meds? You will be made to feel more then welcome here and any questions you have and im sure you have a few just ask we are here to help xx

Welcome to the forum SugarLump 🙂 xx

Hi Sugar Lump, welcome to the forum 🙂 Not surprised you are still feeling shell-shocked and bemused by it all, there is a lot to take in and often the information handed to you at diagnosis is either inadequate or conflicting. You will discover that diabetes is a very personal condition - what works for one person may not work so well for another - so it will be a case of learning the general principles and then finding what works best for you in order to get good blood glucose control.

I'd suggest you have a look at some of the Useful Links here:

http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=10406

I would particularly recommend the book by Gretchen Becker, Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year which is a great introduction to what to expect and how to go about tackling things.

If you have any questions, please ask! Nothing is considered 'silly' so anything at all that may be confusing or bothering you, just let us know - there are hundreds of very friendly and helpful people here who will try their best to set you on the right track 🙂

I look frward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Sugar, you've definitely come to the right place- loads of friendly advice and very often a bit of a laugh too, which is always welcome, you gotta laugh :D

Welcome to the forum Sugarlump 🙂

Hello Sugarlump,

It's now been well over a year since I was diagnosed. I can't believe the journey I've been on since. But I tell you one thing, I am pleased that I found this forum. They are a great bunch of people and there is plenty of personal experience that you can tap into.

Meanwhile, something you might find useful. I was very lucky to get on a course run by the NHS called Diabetes X-Pert. It's a six week jobby for one afternoon per week. It provides a really good grounding in what diabetes is and how you can deal with it. It also provided a really good way to ask questions in a friendly and informal way. There are other courses too (DESMOND, I think is one) that may be run in your area. Check it out with your GP or DSN (diabetes specialist nurse).

Andy 🙂

Yep, most of us were a bit shell shocked after diagnosis. BTDT 🙂

Hi LumpySugarThingy and welcome from me, as well 🙂

As already stated, you'll find a great source of info, links to useful stuff and, most importantly, experiences of others in a similar situation to you.
There other things discussed on here which are absolutely nothing to do with diabetes, but then it is vital to remember that you are a person with diabetes with the world ahead of you, not just a diabetic.

It does seem that there's a load of stuff to take on board at first, but you will get the hang of it, if you want to.

Thanks Steffie, been made to feel very welcome already. I'm on diet and exercise, but may go onto meds for cholestrol.

Hi Andy, I too am glad I've found this forum, people here have been very supportive, I already feel less daunted by my diagnosis. I have signed up to go on an NHS course 'spotlight on Diabetes' My plan is to learn as much as I possibly can so I can help myself as much as possible. From what I understand already diabetes is not exactly black n white, so sharing other peoples experiences will be invaluable.
Heres to a great journey!

G'day

Thanks chrismbee,
I'm sure I'll get the hang of things, trying to learn as much as I possible can at the moment so I can take back control.
I'm definately 'a person with diabetes' NOT 'a diabetic'
And looking forward to all the other stuff that goes on here too!

Northerner is correct. BTDT = Been there, done that.

Meaning we have been where you are and know how you feel. And, just possibly, our experiences may help you avoid some of the mistakes we made. That is what you'll find on that blog.

PS I'm an Aussie and not terribly PC. I'm a diabetic, mate. I'm also a leukemiac, a hypogammaglobulinemiac, a gauche sinister maladroit lefty and a bit annoying at times (especially to dieticians). I don't care what I'm called as long as you remember to call me for dinner or when its your shout at the bar.

Mine's a tinny of amber nectar, if you're offering! :D
Happy to oblige if you're in London 11th-14th June. I'll be staying next to Trafalgar Square.

Mine's a draught Guinness 🙂
