Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone, not sure if i should be here as I am not yet sure 100% if i have diabetes, my dr has told me i am just over the border with a reading of 6.2 after a fasting blood test. I have to go for a glucose intolerance test next tuesday, which sounds interesting, not sure about having to sit in the waiting room for two hours in between blood tests.. I have to supply my own lucozade too!!!

I have suffered from Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum on my shin, been like this for 3 years and always tested negative for diabetes but this last few weeks it has got worse and blisters have now come in the middle of it - I am told NLD is rare but most common in people with diabetes..does anyone else have it on here?

I have also suffer from fibromyaliga for the last 7 years which has caused me mobility problems, so exercise has been hard,so i have put on over 4 stone since being diagonised with fibromyaliga.

Also can some of you advise me if 6.2 is border line for diabetes 2 or have we caught it earlier enough, I am trying to read as much as I can but it is all confusing

I hope someone will be able to explain what 6.2 means and what i can expect from now on?

Many thanks
Foggyjano

Hi Foggyjano, welcome to the forum 🙂 I haven't heard of the condition you describe, but perhaps someone else here has and can relate their experiences. Normally, a fasting level of 6.2 wouldn't be a basis for a diagnosis of diabetes - it would need to be above 7, although a perosn whose blood sugar was well under control (whether naturally or by the use of medication) might expect it to be in the mid-5s, so it does sound a little elevated. The glucose tolerance test is another method of determining how well you respond to changes in glucose in your blood stream, and a reading of 11 or above is normally used as a level at which diabetes is diagnosed.

Do let us know how the test goes - you are more than welcome to ask your questions here, we get many people who are concerned because their levels are not ideal. Do you have any family history of diabetes, or any other symptoms? I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Northerner, thanks for the reply, no family history of diabetes.. Since I have had NLD I have always been told by the hospital I was high risk for diabetes because 2 out of 3 are diabetic that have NLD..it is rare, doesnt look nice and is painful at times, at the moment i am "waiting" for the blisters to break and then it will be a ulcer...

I am hoping the 6.2 means we have caught it before it is full blown diabetes, my dr says the cut off point at our surgery is 6.1 and I am just over that...do different Dr's have "cut off points"

So if my glucose is over a 11 does that mean i defo have diabetes? Will that tell me what type it is ?

I have been looking at what i need to eat but i suppose i will need to wait for my test...I think the problem is alot of the symptoms of diabetes are similar to fibromyalgia so I am not sure if it is result of my sugar or my fibro...lol..

Hi Foggyjano and welcome.
I should imagine it is quite frustrating at the moment for you, but it will all get sorted.
I think regardless of what type you are/if you are determined as, a good healthy diet with 3 balanced meals and a small amount of exercise, even if arm exercises in a chair will go a long way to helping you.

Sorry I haven;t heard of NLD either, but hopefully somebody will be along soon with a little more knowledge to share with you.

Hi Lucy, thanks for your response..yes I am quite frustrated, been a bit of a roller coaster as my leg was the main concern which prompted the fasting blood test..my white blood count is also high, but that needs more investigating, do not think that is related to diabetes. I think I feel better that I am only just over the surgerys limit for what they class as diabetic.

I have tried to attach a photo of my leg but I am sure people can google what Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum looks like if they are interested in it.

I have been going to the toilet alot during the night, wake up with pain in my kidneys ( and everywhere else), feel thirsty alot of the time, but these are fibro symptoms, I do " dip" in energy in the afternoon around 3pm and often have to have something sweet..but again fatigue is a symptom of fibro..so it is hard to see what is fibro and what is something else.. I actually fell asleep for a moment the other day in work while i was typing a letter!!!

Hello

My husband has NLD, but he's had diabetes for 30+ years, his doctor did say on his last flare up that his vericose (sp) vains didn't help it... So far he's doing well keeping it at bay, Diprobase nightly and when it flares fucibet which steriod cream..

Problem with steriods is that they can increase the blood glucose, and can cause T2 diabetes..

You won't have to stay hanging around the waiting room while they doing the GGT, as long as you return on time for the blood test slots, you be free to go for a walk, as long as you don't eat or drink anything apart from water, but it will give you a clear idea what is happen with your blood sugar levels...

Hi Ellie, I use diprobase every day on my NLD, not used any steriod creams after the first few weeks because it wasn't helping and I knew it thinned the skin, didnt know steriods can cause D2, however I havent used steriods for about 3 years. I don't have any vericose veins, that is why we are all at a loss why i have got NLD without the diabetes, but now this test has come back with high glucose levels, I suppose it was just a matter of time

Thank goodness I dont have to stay sat in the waiting room for 2 hours, I was dreading that...lol... Yes I just want the test now to see what happens..thanks for your reply🙂

Re the waiting room wait, I think you should check with your gp Foggy, when I had this test for the first time I did leave the waiting room, went for some retail therapy and then returned. However, my GP then made me do the test again because the results were inconclusive. On the second test, I sat in the waiting room and read my book, went surprisingly quickly. I was then diagnosed as a result of that test with Type 2. Hope this helps

Hi Klocky you are right, I cannot leave the waiting room - one they do not know how i will react to the lucozade and I have been told to read a book too - must want us quiet and not stressed...lol..luckily I am reading a good James Paterson book so it will go quickly..

Thanks it helped 🙂
