Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All
I have been having glucose tolerance test for the past 3 years. I have been prediabetic with readings of 6.9 to 10.9 .
Today I have had results of 7.0 before cal drink going up to 12.0 This makes me type 2 diabetic. I have been expecting this result as my mother & grandmother both had late onset type 2 .
I am due to see my doctor to discuss my results on Monday. Please can I have some information on what to expect him to say. (i.e will I need to regularly check my blood glucose and be on a sugar-free diet?) Will I have to take Metforim . I just need to be armed with some info on this condition. At the mo I seem to be a complete novice ! Thanks in advance- Liz

Welcome to the forums Cheedar 🙂

It's difficult to know exactly what a doctor would say. It could be "Go away and eat a diabetic diet and here is some pills" or it could be more helpful.

For diabetes you need to keep an eye on consumption of all carbohydrates, not just sugar. Starchy foods like potatoes and white bread (and most breakfast cereals) are well known banes to many Type 2's.

Checking your blood glucose isn't mandatory - but it is a really helpful thing to do since it allows you to identify which foods raise your blood glucose the most (we are all different).

Hi Liz, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I would suggest having a look in the 'Useful Links' thread for some good reading matter about Type 2, in particular I would recommend Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. The book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker is also well worth getting - many of our members swear by it as the best introduction to Type 2 🙂

What you should expect from the NHS in terms of support should help inform you about what your appointment should confirm. Most people here would recommend self-testing as the best method for understanding and managing your diabetes well, as you will learn how different foods affect your blood sugar levels, and what things you can tolerate well.

Please ask us any questions you may have and we will do our best to help! 🙂

Hi

I was diagnosed as type 2 September 10 when having pre-op tests (lucky me!).

Like you a parent has type 2 (father). I didn't have any signs or symptoms so a bit of a surprise even though I knew a close relative can increase your risk. Not overweight/active/balanced diet etc etc.

Anyway I had 2 fasting blood tests to confirm & after talking to GP over diet exercise I went straight onto Metformin & a statin; as he thought I'd probably had it for sometime but due to lifestyle hadn't noticed! Low doses of 2 500g metformin tabs a day & 10mg statin. (I was having some surgery followed by radiotherapy so they didn't mess me about with blood tests until my cancer treatment over). Then metformin increased as levels still over 7. Anyway I upped my exercise & watched diet but probably no more than I was.

Had latest HBA1c results last week down to 5.8 metformin back to starter dose.

I don't self-test only have HBA1c test every 6 months & chat with diabetic nurse. Also have annual kidney/cholesterol/retinopathy/foot checks etc. I feel a lot of this is genetic & my dad is now facing dialysis at some stage next year; so I'll be keeping a close eye on my annual kidney tests.

My advice is a normal healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly if you can as this I've found has really helped me. Oh and make sure you attend clinic appts. On this site somewhere I printed off a 15 point checklist which details what should be checked each year. I found this very helpful & noted my test results on it. I just need to remember the safe place I put it in next time I need to refer to it. New to the forum so no idea how to put a link in.

Take care
Lynne 😛

Thank you all so very much for the helpful replies. It is half the battle to know there are folks out there that are also experiencing this diabetic condition. I will read through the links and will take much interest in this supportive forum & try to read through all the threads . I am also hypothyroid so I bury myself in those forums as well.
Thanks once again. Liz

You'll find you are not alone here with the thyroid problems Liz - very common partner to diabetes!
