Hi everyone, has anyone had the Dexcom One CGM system prescribed but had trouble obtaining a full kit please (particularly in Wales) thanks

Hi and welcome.

I don't think we have anyone on the forum prescribed Dexcom One yet but I believe a few are pushing for it. When you say, "trouble obtaining the full kit" Do you mean a reader for it?

I've read on twitter some confusion (in England) about how delivery of the transmitters are to be arranged. I think some people early on were sent them directly from Dexcom but my understanding is that they're supposed to be supplied now by pharmacists (so I guess there needs to be some suitable arrangement with them). It sounded like that kind of logistical issue was delaying Dexcom One a bit. (Might also be the reader, of course.)

Ah! It needs a separate transmitter! I am not up to speed with Dexcom but thought some further clarification from the OP might help others respond. Does that piggy back onto the sensor like with a Bubble or Miao Miao with Libre?
So relieved that LIbre works pretty well for me.

That's my understanding, yes. The transmitter provides Bluetooth much like those add ons do for Libre 1. (And for Dexcom I think the transmitter has a fixed battery so has to be discarded after a few months. G6 has the same sort of thing but G7 is more like Libre 3 (and 2), with the sensor including Bluetooth.)

Thanks for that.

Hi, short answer not yet.

Dexcom One has been recommended for me by my Endo to my GP. I've spent the last month wading in treacle, trying to get that recommendation translated into a prescription, in Bucks.
My local pharmacy has confirmed they can see it listed but have not provided to anyone; interestingly they can't see a listing for a reader - which specifically interests me since my phone is not compatible (and I like having a reader anyway).
My GP Surgery passed this on 8 Oct to their Primary Care Network (PCN) clinical support team; today a withheld number from this PCN called me today to tell me that the Bucks, Oxford and Berks (West) Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB) had confirmed by phone that this CGM wasn't yet approved.
I also found the PALS for the BOB ICB; emailed and left a phone message this morning, which got me a phone call back from someone who clearly understood the internal machinations of BOB ICB and their approvals process.

So I'm not holding my breath. But I've quoted NG 17 to each organisation and mentioned my MP as well as local media and the formal complaints process to NHS England. Now I wait to see if anyone blinks! It's taken about 3 hrs this morning to make this break-in to various otherwise abstract and almost unreachable organisations who are to all intents and purposes not just uncontactable, but unaccountable. [I'm working on preparing my email to my MP!]

Hiya @MWilso2. I’m in Pembrokeshire. My consultant gave me the Dexcom One to try ahead of it becoming available on prescription. She can prescribe it, from the hospital, but it can’t go on my GP-provided prescription - as yet.

Unfortunately, my smartphone isn’t compatible so I need to get my hands on a handset / reader before I can try it - so not as straightforward as the Libre! 🙂

It clips in

Your pic introduces to me the realisation that it doesn't necessarily have to go on one's arm. Are there DVLA constraints about where the Dexcom One may go, please.

Also the current uncertainty from my ICB about funding approval is causing me to consider self-funding. Do you happen to have some experience with Dexcom 7? If I should decide to self-fund I ought to explore the options.

This is for the G6 but I see no reason why the ONE would be different: https://www.dexcom.com/en-GB/faqs/where-can-i-insert-my-g6-sensor

I’ve only used Dex 6, which I have found to be very good.

I think @Pumper_Sue has experience of other/earlier dexcom incarnations

Different sensors are licensed for different locations, and sometimes different recommended locations for different age groups.

You’d be best looking up the manufacturer’s website I think!

According to that table of which CGMs were available from where in the NHS, Dexcom One and Dexcom G6 can be used in the same places (back of the arms, abdomen, and buttocks). (I seem to remember comments that some parts of the table were wrong, though.)

These are the G6 locations as listed in the manual

There are no restrictions at all 🙂
Sorry for the long wait in for my reply, there was a huge power outage here last week plus a loss of internet until today. Thunderstorm was a bit 😱 as was the rain.

Thank you. No apology needed, but thank you for that also.

Currently it's all become 'theoretical' since the Bucks, Oxford and Berkshire (West) (BOB) Integrated Care Board (ICB) have not considered, never mind authorised, NG17; hence the use of Dexcom One or anything else in NG17. At present I can't establish any sort of timeframe for this situation to be resolved.
