Hi all,
I have had type one diabetes for 38 years and am having massive issues with insulin resistance and losing weight.
Most mornings my BS is 18 + so I give myself a correction dose and don’t eat, I continue this throughout the day always correcting my BS as it is always high, I don’t eat much throughout the day but am having massive correction doses and unfortunately I am not losing weight, I am currently 20 stone, 5’8 aged 49.
Can anyone shed some light on this please ?
 
Hello @Nicola703 welcome to the forum. Others with more experience than I will be along soon so keep an eye on this thread.

A little more info would be helpful, what insulin’s are you on.
Has this started recently or been going on some time.
If you are in a bolus (mealtime) insulin are you on fixed doses or adjust them according to the carbohydrates your having.
Sorry for all the questions, only answer the ones your happy too

One thought . if your not eating much our liver can put out more glucose to give us the fuel we need.
 
Welcome Nicola703.Well done for your 38yrs of T1. It is a pain in the ---- at times. We had a member who was on insulin for 60yrs the other week. I have been for 52yrs. Have you thought about a Pump ? Insulin is given 24hrs a day. Good luck 🙂
 
Hi Nicola, welcome to the forum, and congrats on your 38 years of T1.

The insulin resistance you have would probably disappear if you were to lose weight, it’s as simple, or as difficult as that. Sorry to be the bearer of such news, but we do have folk on the forum who have managed it. Have a look on the weight loss board. A pump would be of little benefit, because insulin is insulin, and you would still be resistant.
 
Hi, welcome to the board.
I followed the advice to base all meals around starchy carbs for the first 15 years that I had type 1 and I became very overweight and developed insulin resistance.
It was only when I abandoned that advice and cut back on carbs and started properly carb counting that I was able to lose weight and I now use a quarter of the insulin that I took back then. I also found a pump invaluable in helping me reduce the hypos I experienced when using long acting insulins.
Are you under the care of a Diabetes clinic? If so I would recommend you seek their help.
 
hello all, I,dont believe half the stories I read on here. I have been a T1 diabetic for the last 15 years....it came on all of a sudden a long with coeliac disease, hyperthyroidism, and asthma..my life changed completely from eating what I wanted to watching nd reading labels on most products to see what I was able to eat. My control is very good and my weight stays the same. I eat pretty healthy and stay active. Diabetes shouldn't stop you from doing anything at all. Be strong. I am eating all the time and its a mixture of food. Cereal in the morning(porridge) 7am, 10am I'm having bamas on toast, then nuts in between, dinner at 12
30pm then a piece of fruit or yoghurt and a packet of crisps...more nuts later before I finish work. I have my tea at 6ish then something before I go to bed. I wake up always between 4.5/6 and I never go to bed lower than 10. It works well for me. I take my insulin 5 times day amd I find it gives you the flexibility you need if you plan on eating a little later than normal. Its all about control. I dont count carbs but just dose myself up to what I am eating which works. I very rarely hypo..once a month my sugars drop but this is due to hormones and I make sure I keep my sugars up during this time...it doesn't always work but hey ho I manage. I dont drink sugary drinks at all...tea and coffee and a little wine does it for melols..and the gluten free beer is great. Being Glutenfree is more of a pain than diabetes for me. I do alot of cooking and enjoy food and like trying new recipes. There are loads of restaurants now that cater for GF which is better than it was 15 years ago. Even the supermarkets are on board now. I do find GF expensive and not sure why....but you can get pasta, bread, pizza bases on prescription which helps

I think your post just proves what an individual condition diabetes can be and treats us all very differently. From reading others experiences it's clear to see what works for one, doesn't work for another. Some of us toddle along pretty much ok, others struggle even with a lot of effort. Maybe you still have a few beta cells kicking around and helping you along🙂. (Personally I wouldn't want to go to bed with a level of 10 or higher).

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Are you taking a background insulin, moving your injection area and have you work out your ratio on carb counting etc.
 
I would go back to the nurse and get this checked over. If your taking ur insulin and your sugar levels are not getting any lower and your not eating then there is definitely something wrong. Please seek medical advice.

thanks. You are right we are all different but that works for me. If I went to bed on 5 I would hypo during the night. I'm too active in the day for that but if that works for you great
 
Hi, that was me when I was first on mdi, having to go to bed around 9-10 to get through the night, but fortunately having fiddled around with basal and splitting dose I've managed to sort that...I'm sure you've tried all that. Libre has helped too. Am active too and excercise can often be a tricky one to deal with...anyway sorted for now....well, until the wind changes direction or the diabetes fairy decides to interfere !🙂
 
Its not an exact science being Diabetic, some days are good & then bang. :D
