Hedgehogs

On path near lawn wife has tray of water for birds to drink, more often they bath in it. On mornings often see hedgehog poo on lawn & around tray so know hedgehogs must also drink from it, odd occasion we will see one scurry across lawn when going to bed.

Last night she looked out of bedroom window & down below one was having drink, out of nowhere another came from neighbours lawn to join it, one was smaller than other so assume that was female. The big one started circling other while making loud grunting sound, we just guessed it was mating sound rather than act of aggression, this went on for ages & eventually we went to bed, but could still here them outside.

Hedgehogs are becoming rare so nice to see two together, in this misery going on at moment it was pleasing to see these wonderful creatures.

I read a few weeks ago that sightings of hedgehogs in people's gardens are on the rise at the moment. We have seen one a few times in our garden (rather large and looks very healthy) and our parents have one who appears like clockwork every evening - wandering along the path for a drink on their patio.

You lucky thing, we’ve never had a hedgehog in our garden. I think it’s something to do with the fact we don’t have any access for them, I watched a programme about them once and they can walk miles in a single night walking around the perimeters of gardens, fields etc. I love them and would love to see one, alive!

My neighbours and I have what we call a hedgehog run at the bottom of our gardens 🙂 As we know HH's travel this route we have all made sure gaps have been left so they can travel from garden to garden in search of food. When I bought my rented home a new fence had to go up so I made sure the contractor left gaps for passport free travel from garden to garden 🙂

Unfortunately my neighbours encourage badgers so we never see hedgehogs anymore.

I always put water out for them, last year when we had that really long dry and hot spell because of lack of water the adults had to just walk away from the juveniles and we nearly lost a whole generation.
If you can please put some water out for all the animals, they really need it in the warm weather.

I have not seen any this year or last , but the year before we had a few young ones. They used to come through the chain link fence between me and my nieghbour. I left food and water for them.

They’ve returned to to our neighbourhood after disappearing for a few years.

In my last house we had a very large back garden and used to get a family of hedgehogs every night in the summer. We used to buy cat food for them and I built a stone shelter for them so they could eat their food and drink in peace.

A hedgehog rescue organisation encouraged my granddaughter and son-in-law to construct hedgehog houses for two rescued hedgehogs that arrived just before the lockdown. They have a camera to record activity and are hoping for a hedgehog family. The female hedgehog arrived before the male, soon attracting the attention of a different male hedgehog from the fields. As the granddaughter is only 7, my son-in-law had to be very careful in his explanation of what was going on in the video recording.
