Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I'm new to both Diabetes and computers! I'm trying to find out more about the condition (the computer I'm already working on) Joking aside, I really do need to get to grips with Diabetes and find out as much as I can so I can make informed decisions.

welcome

hi there heather - just wanted to welcome you - you'll get loads of support from other type 2's on here and the thing to remember is nothing is too silly to ask so ask away!

Hope you manage to get your head round the computer and the diabetes enough for each day,

lets hope using this forum makes you want to learn computing and in turn reveals a whole new life experience to you,

good luck
rachel

Hi Heather and welcome to the forums. Being diagnosed can knock you sideways and you will need a bit of time to get used to what is happening - but you will get there.

this link may help you

Can you tell us a bit more, are you trying the diet and exercise route? or have you been put on meds and what are they.

If you are prescribed medication for your diabetes you will be entitled to free prescriptions. As a diabetic you are also entitled to a free yearly eye test with an optician - you should also be referred for retinal screening and will be offered a flu jab in the autumn.

Hi Heather. Welcome 🙂

Ask as many questions as you like. There's nothing too basic or silly.

Rob

Hi Heather and a warm welcome to the forum.

Hi Heather and welcome from a fellow Type2. You've made a good start by joining here. I've been diabetic for a few years now but only joined here in March. We're a friendly lot and between us I'm sure we can answer your questions as well as give you the support and encouragement you need. I look forward to getting to know you better. XXXXX

I'm really struggling just trying to work out how to reply! Hopefully this messege gets through. If not I'll have to get my eldest to sit with me again so please bear with me. I was diagnosed Oct 09 but I have been living in disbelief, deniel and feeling angry that this could happen to me and have carried on pretty much as usual. I'm discovering I can't get away with it and am indeed trying to come to terms with having Diabetes. I'm really struggling to lose weight and\or get active and I seem to have had a knee-jerk reaction of defience up 'till now. I understand that I'm not making enough insulin and\or my body's unable to utilise it properly but there seems to be so much more to it than that and I'm very confused and bewildered. Getting 'on line' and joining your website is a quite a big step. Any pointers greatly appreciated. Thanks. Heather4

Your eldest is not needed as you managed just fine! 🙂

Well done for coming to terms with the fact that you have diabetes and realising you need to do something about it. Believe me you are by no means alone in going through a period of denial, it's quite a common thing to do. Put that behind you now and move on. You are right there is a lot to take in and learn, but no one expects you to know it all straight away. Start with the simple things and take it one step at a time.

What meds if any are you taking? And have you been offered any kind of course such as Desmond or Expert Patient? XXXXX

Nice to meet you. I'm afraid I'm very new to computers (being a bit of a tecno-phobe) so please forgive me if I get the ettiquette wrong or simply havn't worked out how to respond yet. I was diagnosed Oct 09 but it's taken this long to get to the beggining of the acceptance part and to even consider taking it seriously. I have tried to reply to Magie and have emailed another for pointers on the logistics of computing. I may well have to give up untill my eldest can help me out-which means this reply has also failed and I am, indeed, talking to myself again! Thank you for your kind response and I hope to be able to talk with you again soon. Heather4.

That post worked too. I think you're better at this computer lark than you realise. By the way, I'm a technophobe too! I know what I know but it takes me ages to work out something new! It's my middle one that often has to point me in the right direction. XXXXX

Hello. I'm not on any meds yet. I've been given 4 months to get it under control or I'll have to start tablets and I'm a very reluctant patient. I do realise I need to educate myself though as there seems to be so many new and strange things going on with my body (which may or may not be related) which are cause for concern. I hear different things from different people which just seems to confuse me further. And no, I havn't been offered any courses. Heather4.

Hello again. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I've been feeling a bit of a dinosaur thouroughly left behind when it comes to computers, my own doing too as I'm fairly reluctant to try anything new these days (and now I'm sounding like one too!) I'm really pleased I've found this site and I hope I'm not offending anyone by only responding as I have tonight. I'm going to sign off now as I've an early start in the morning. Thank you for your kind words and support and I hope to be speaking with you again soon. Heather4.

Good night and sleep well. XXXXX

Welcome from me as well, and don't worry too much about being accepted here -- they've been putting up with me for three months! 😉

Going into a period of denial is all too common -- I just recently (February) emerged from a six-month one, but am now back on track.

I hope you haven't been given the nonsense that "Type 2s don't need to test their blood sugars". How are you supposed to gain control if you don't know how you're doing? This page (left click the underlined text) should help you get started. I also recommend getting the "Carbs And Cals" book listed in the Books section.

Hi Heather I was diagnosed ten days ago, the lovely folks here recommended a book 'the first year type two diabetes' by gretchen Becker, am in the middle of it and it's excellent at explaining all the stuff you can't get your head round

Heather - have a look at whats on offer at your local library/school or college. You can often find free courses on computing via that route. Some local radio stations offer courses too. You are better than you think with the compute but if you got yourself a free course that would make you realise what you do know and enable you to fill in some gaps.

Just wanted to say Hi Heather and welcome.

Don't worry, we're mostly a thick skinned lot in here so I very much doubt you will offend anybody by not replying. As long as you're getting help and support from this site you wont be going far wrong 🙂

Thanks for the kind greetings. It's really nice to meet you all and thanks for your ongoing support. As you can tell, my eldest has been sitting with me this morning and helping me (or trying to help me) understand how all of this works. I think I've got it now. I'll let you know when he's left me to my own devices.

robert@fm - Thanks for the link (and telling me how to use it).

Lilies - Thank you for the book recommendation.

Blythespirit - Thank you for the info on the courses, can you please tell me more? Cheers.

And thank you to everyone who has taken the time out to reply.
