Does intense heat affect your blood glucose levels? It is very warm over here in Norway and for no apparent reason, my blood glucose levels were higher than of late. My testing kit had been on the dining room table in full sun?

Just wondered?

Donna 🙂

Hi, my levels tend to go a lot lower when it's hotter than usual. Not sure whether leaving the meter in direct sun affects the readings or not though 🙂

I find I go hypo much more in hotter weather - seems it affects different Diabetics up or down from their usual levels. Great fun isn't it ?

I have just had this conversation with my friend - on Monday I went to the docs and explained to the nurse that I wasn't feeling any better, and my BG levels have remained high despite the tablets.

Since Tuesday (and our heatwave) my levels are notably lower pre meals... Is it possible the tablets just started working overnight, or is it likely the vast change in temperature has had more to do with it?

I am confused!!!

It can be very confusing where hot or cold weather is concerned - I tend to go lower when it is hot, but lots of people do go higher. With me I suspect that the insulin is absorbed more quickly as more blood capilliaries open up around the injection site, but this shouldn't affect tablets I wouldn't have thought.

I would imagine it's possible the meter was affected by being left in temperatures above its normal operating range though.

Perhaps the tablets have started having an effect!!! Fingers crossed! The conversation with the nurse on Monday was all about what happens when the tablets dont work - have I been briefed on where we go from here etc....

Well if the tablets have started working, i dont need to go anywhere from here! :D

According to my Bayer Contour bumf, the operating temperature range is between 5 and 45 celcius.

But in theory it would give an error outside of this range when the blood is tested.

Andy 🙂

p.s. But I wouldn't leave it in the sun before testing mind you!

It's been very warm here the past two days and Millie has been running low with a couple of hypo's. This seems to be her trend with the warm weather.

Carly is lower than usual during this heat too. Sometimes high is a sign of illness coming, hope youre ok

That is why diabetics arnt encouraged to go in saunas/steam rooms. Roll on summer. 😉

Nope both mine and hubbies BG's have been slightly higher than normal with the heat:(

LOL Hobie - we have a hot tub which has a 20 min timer on it, obviously you can ignore it and just stay until you are as wrinkly as you like - and I frequently have to get out after 12-15 mins cos i think I'm hypo - and I'm usually correct.

So.....if you are a little high.....just have a quick dip in the hot tub rather than a correction dose! :D
