Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) was associated with a significantly greater risk of severe hypoglycemia in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers found.
Those with a definite diagnosis of CAN were more than twice as likely as those with normal autonomic function to have a severe hypoglycemic episode over about a decade of follow-up (HR 2.43, 95% CI 1.21-4.84), according to Seung-Hyun Ko, MD, PhD, of the Catholic University of Korea, and colleagues.
The risk was not higher, however, in patients with a diagnosis of early CAN (HR 1.74, 95% CI 0.87-3.46), they reported online in Diabetes Care.
