Medical staff are to receive customer care training from the John Lewis retail group.
Doctors, nurses and other health professionals in the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group will be trained to put customers, or patients, first by staff from the department store.
The news comes months after Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt first suggested the idea.
Mr Hunt said because private companies sink or swim depending on customer satisfaction, they had become market leaders in delivering what the customer wanted.
