Help for parents of diabetic kids
MUMS and dads with diabetic youngsters still have the chance to sign up for a free networking event. It is being hosted by the health charity Diabetes UK in the Halliwell Centre at Trinity College, Carmarthen, between 10am and 3pm on Saturday, November 20. Diabetes and obesity levels rise in Somerset
PEOPLE in Somerset are being warned to watch their weight following a worrying rise in diabetes and obesity levels. The number of patients with diabetes in the county last year was 23,099, a rise of 1,211 or 5.5%, while obesity cases increased by 4,775 or 11% to 47,591. Graham Cooper, regional manager for Diabetes UK South West, said the figures were “shocking”.

Statin increase 'will save lives'
Raising the dose of cholesterol-lowering drugs could prevent many more heart attacks and strokes, say researchers. UK and Australian teams compared a standard statin treatment with a more intensive therapy, publishing results in the Lancet medical journal.

A new way of checking up on care homes for the elderly in England will put vulnerable residents at greater risk, says a union representing inspectors. Unison says the new system of written self-assessments will mean thousands of homes will avoid inspections altogether if they look good on paper.
