Diabetes levels a ticking 'time bomb' - doctors
A HEALTHCARE time bomb is set to explode after revelations that one in every 20 residents of Ealing is likely to have diabetes, and that 10 per cent of them are unaware of their condition. The figures represent 20,800 who are likely to have the life-threatening condition - in which a patient's blood glucose is too high - and 3,300 of them have yet to be diagnosed, according to the Diabetes Health Intelligence. Racer Craig beats diabetes to become Scottish champ

WEST Fife motor racing champion Craig Brunton is used to overcoming major challenges both on and off the track. Craig (23), from Carnock, has Type 1 diabetes and faced a tough battle to even prove he was fit and healthy enough to take part in racing. Diabetes UK mentioned.

Art exhibition helps diabetics

AN exhibition and charity auction will be held this month to raise money for Diabetes Society UK.

Pat Winnington, who has produced paintings of Warrington, wanted to raise money for a worthy charity.

Team takes part in John O?Groats to Land?s End Deloitte Ride
Five friends from Bradley have raised ?6,000 for charities after cycling from John O?Groats to Land?s End. The group were among 600 cyclists who took part in the inaugural Deloitte Ride across Britain. Fellow participants included Olympians James Cracknell and Rebecca Romero and Paralympic gold medalists Sarah Storey and Jody Cundy. Diabetes UK mentioned.

Huw and Rachel ride to Paris
A Monmouth couple have cycled from London to Paris and raised ?3,900 for a cause close to their hearts. Huw Thomas-Hewartson has Type 1 diabetes and took on the challenge with his wife Rachel to raise funds for Diabetes UK.

'Pear-shaped' genes uncovered
The parts of our DNA which may influence body shape, including the classic "apple" or "pear" shape in women, have been revealed. A UK study in Nature Genetics found the locations of 13 genes which may play a role, with a stronger effect in women. Where body fat lies may affect diabetes and heart disease risk, so the results could shed light on those diseases.

Deaf people 'can rewire brains'

People deaf from birth may be able to reassign the area of their brain used for hearing to boost their sight, suggests a study. Improved peripheral vision, often reported by deaf people, could be generated by the brain area which would normally deal with peripheral hearing.

Salt and fat content 'too high' in child hospital meals

There is too much salt and fat in the food served to children in hospital, a survey suggests. Research from Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) found 85 of the 189 child hospital meals tested would be too unhealthy to be served in schools. The meals exceeded salt and fat limits for school lunches introduced in 2008
