An implanted sleeve that looks like a giant sausage skin is being used to tackle the most common form of diabetes. The 2ft-long device, developed as an incision-less alternative to a type of weight-loss surgery known as a duodenal switch, can reverse the disease within weeks.

All patients getting cancer treatment should be told to do two and a half hours of physical exercise every week, says a report by Macmillan Cancer Support. Being advised to rest and take it easy after treatment is an outdated view, the charity says.

Morning smoking has cancer risk

People who smoke soon after getting up in the morning are more likely to develop cancer than those who light up later in the day, say US researchers. A study of 7,610 smokers, published in the journal Cancer, said the effect was independent of other smoking habits.

Health trusts have been accused of paying ?1million of taxpayers? money to a lobby group to stop patients getting vital drugs. The Commissioning Support Appraisals Service gives training and advice on how trusts can avoid paying for expensive drugs approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, the NHS rationing body.
