Drug watchdog in fraud investigation

The safety of medicines in the UK has been cast into doubt by a fraud inquiry at the European regulator responsible for licensing pharmaceutical drugs across the EU. The European Medicines Agency, based in Canary Wharf, London, is under investigation over alleged conflicts of interest by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). If proven, the allegation would undermine confidence in the pharmaceutical industry which is already reeling from a series of disasters involving heavily publicised medicines, which later turned out to have deadly side effects.

The 'gastric pacemaker' that warns the brain you're full!

It is the latest hi-tech weapon in the battle of the bulge - a stomach implant that tricks the brain into feeling full. Experts claim the 'gastric pacemaker' can train obese people to eat normal-sized meals without the need for surgery that drastically changes the size of their stomach. The credit card-sized implant detects when food has been eaten and sends signals to the brain to create the impression of fullness, regardless of the portion's size.

Stem cells transformed into brain cells to treat Parkinson's disease

Brain cells that die off in Parkinson's disease have been grown from stem cells and grafted into monkeys' brains in a major step towards new treatments for the condition. US researchers say they have overcome previous difficulties in coaxing human embryonic stem cells to become the neurons killed by the disease. Tests showed the cells survive and function normally in animals and reverse movement problems caused by Parkinson's in monkeys. The breakthrough raises the prospect of transplanting freshly grown dopamine-producing cells into human patients to treat the disease.
