Backers of NHS shake-up turn against Andrew Lansley's plans
Leading doctors voice concerns that reforms will suffocate GPs and jeopardise promised freedom to commission care. Dr Charles Alessi and Dr Michael Dixon have helped Andrew Lansley claim credibility for his plans among doctors over the past 18 months by strongly supporting his radical restructuring. They are leading lights in the NHS Alliance and the National Association of Primary Care, two key pro-reform organisations.

?15bn lawyers' bill for NHS blunders: Avalanche of no-win, no-fee claims push costs up 13%
An avalanche of claims against doctors has left the Health Service with a ?15.7billion bill. The sum ? one seventh of the annual NHS budget ? has had to be set aside to pay compensation over future years to tens of thousands of victims of clinical negligence. A report by MPs reveals that much of the bill is the result of blunders that have left babies brain-damaged.

Scandal of 11 million Britons facing pension and care crisis
Eleven million Britons are totally unprepared for the fact that they will have to pay for their own care in old age. One in four workers wrongly believes that the costs will be met by the Government. Yet half of those aged 65 now are expected to pay bills of up to ?20,000 and one in 10 will face bills exceeding ?100,000. A tiny six per cent have started to set money aside.

Vomiting bug cases soar in big freeze
The Siberian freeze could trigger a devastating winter vomiting outbreak, experts warned last night.

Health officials say bitter conditions set to grip Britain ? possibly until next month ? could see cases of the potentially fatal norovirus soar. In the past fortnight, the bug has been suspected in 34 hospitals. Laboratory tests confirmed 19 to be norovirus. Wards have closed at 23 hospitals with visiting hours restricted due to the virus which also causes diarrhoea.

How sun boosts a man?s sex drive
Scientists yesterday revealed that lots of sunshine increases the level of the male sex hormone testosterone. Ninety per cent of the body?s vitamin D is produced by the action of sunlight on the skin. And the researchers said sufficiently high levels of the vitamin have a ?positive influence? on testosterone.

Perfect timing
Now scientists at Birmingham University believe that some natural timing can boost the effectiveness of flu jabs. Because our immune system becomes less efficient with age, only one in three pensioners who have flu jabs gets full protection. However the team at Birmingham believes rescheduling appointments could provide a simple solution. A two-year trial of 300 elderly patients is under way to test the theory with preliminary results suggesting that mornings are best for men while afternoon shots are the most effective for women.

David Cameron's "listening exercise" on the NHS was just a tactic, admits former aide
It was billed as the great listening exercise to take on board the concerns of a nation fearing for the future of our envied NHS. But David Cameron?s vow to *reconsider his hated health reforms was last night exposed as another empty Tory pledge, by his former adviser James O?Shaughnessy. The PM claimed the Government had ?listened and learned? after bitter *opposition to the plans forced him to put them on hold while NHS staff and patients were asked for their views. But as opposition to the reforms gathered pace, Mr O?Shaughnessy admitted the public meetings last year were a sham ? just a ?tactic? to get them through.

Junkies in jail cost NHS ?100m a year
NHS chiefs are forking out more than ?100million a year to treat drug addicts in prison, thanks to a human rights ruling. Most of the cash goes on the heroin substitute methadone ? used to wean junkies off narcotics. The huge bill comes after inmates sued the Government saying it was inhuman to go ?cold turkey? behind bars. Ministers had to pay out almost ?1million in compensation to around 200 prisoners who came off drugs when they were locked up and suffered withdrawal symptoms. Critics claim jail bosses are now reluctant to wean prisoners for fear of breaching their human rights.

Spoon feeding 'makes babies fatter'
Babies weaned on pureed food tend to end up fatter than infants whose first tastes are finger food, researchers believe.

Spoon feeding babies mashed up fruits and vegetables appears to give them a sweeter tooth, a Nottingham University team found after studying 155 children.

Parents who frequently move house 'put children's health at risk'
Children who frequently move house are more likely to suffer poor health, research suggests. Moving several times before the age of 18 can impact on overall health, psychological distress and increase the likelihood a child may use illegal drugs.
