Cancer denial 'killing thousands'
Thousands of people in the UK are dying unnecessarily because they are too scared to mention early symptoms of cancer to their doctor, say experts. A survey of 2,000 for Cancer Research UK suggests 40% might delay getting symptoms checked out because they are worried what the doctor might find.Yet early diagnosis is key to treating cancer successfully.

We have two weeks to save the NHS, say leading academics
Leading health academics Colin Leys and Allyson Pollock yesterday issued a rallying call to everyone who wants to save the NHS. This is, they both said, a crucial fortnight. With the Liberal Democrat conference looming, which they both saw as a last-chance opportunity to stop the Lansley reforms, they largely ignored their brief from the Bath Festival of Literature ? to talk about the long-term future of the service at an Independent Voices debate entitled "Is the NHS sacred?"

The ?1.40 heart pill lifesaver: 10,000 patients a year could be saved by newly-licensed drug
A pill costing only ?1.40 a day could save the lives of thousands of heart failure patients every year. The drug ivabradine, which slows the heart rate and improves its pumping ability, cut deaths by up to 39 per cent in trials.Professor Martin Cowie, consultant cardiologist and specialist in heart failure at the Royal Brompton Hospital, said that at a conservative estimate it could save between 5,000 and 10,000 lives a year.

Smoking deaths will not fall without political action, doctors warn
Fifty years after its groundbreaking report in which doctors first tried to talk directly to the public about the catastrophic dangers of smoking, the Royal College of Physicians warns today that the death toll from cigarettes will not fall unless the government takes decisive action. On the anniversary of its celebrated 1962 report on smoking and health that started to turn the tide, the RCP says more than six million people have lost their lives to tobacco and more than a fifth of the population still uses cigarettes.

Yogurt that might stop a heart attack
Your digestive system alone is home to roughly 100 trillion microbes ? about 10 times the number of cells in the major organs. A team co-led by Prof Jeroen Raes of the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology has discovered that we all have one of three basic ecosystems of bugs in our guts ? but strangely, the type for each person is unrelated to their race, native country or diet. They label these ?enterotypes? the ?bacteriodes?, ?prevotella? and ?ruminococcus?, to reflect the species of bug that dominate in each. People with a bacteriodes ecosystem, for example, have a bias towards bacteria that get most of their energy from carbohydrates and proteins.

IT firm behind 'unworkable' NHS database keeps IT deal
Computer Sciences Corporation, an American IT firm, previously had a ?1.9 billion contract for the national NHS system which was scrapped by Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, last year. The firm is understood to have threatened legal action against the Government and is now thought to have agreed to continue with up to ?900 million of NHS work in return for dropping any legal action. It will run computer systems for the NHS across the north, midlands and eastern England under the deal which is expected to be agreed in the coming days.

Air ambulance first in UK to carry blood
London's Air Ambulance is carrying blood supplies from Tuesday - the first such service in the UK to do so. The innovation has been made possible due to a new refrigeration unit used by the British and American military. It will allow blood transfusions to be administered on the scene of accidents, rather than later in hospitals.
