Skin cancer treatments revealed at conference
Patients with advanced skin cancer could benefit from two new treatments that extend life, a cancer meeting in Chicago has heard. Scientists say a pill called Vemurafenib appears to give patients a greater chance of surviving longer than chemotherapy.

The risk posed to unborn children by powerful epilepsy drugs could be easier to avoid following an 11-year study. While the four most common drugs are all linked with a higher chance of birth defects, researchers believe they have pinpointed the safest.

E. coli outbreak: German farm in Uelzen 'likely source'

A farm in northern Germany has been identified as the most likely source of many of the infections in the E. coli outbreak that has left 22 people dead. The farm, producing bean sprouts, is located in Uelzen, south of Hamburg, the epicentre of the outbreak that has also made more than 2,000 people ill.

Eye implant for macular oedema recommended by NICE
A drug-infused eye implant which treats a type of vision loss has been approved by the medicines watchdog in England and Wales. Final draft guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said the implant was suitable for some patients with macular oedema.

Drug firms cut vaccine prices to the developing world

Several major drugs companies have announced big cuts to the amounts they charge for their vaccines in the developing world. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Merck, Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi-Aventis have agreed to cut prices through the international vaccine alliance Gavi.
