Danger of muffin tops fuelling cancer

A BULGING ?muffin top? waistline not only puts a woman at greater risk of cancer but fuels its growth, a study has found. Scientists have warned that it acts as a ?launching pad? for the rapid spread of the disease.

New NHS Board will help patients 'shop around' for GP
The new NHS Commissioning Board, which is at the heart of the government's controversial NHS reforms in England, is due to start work. The board, which will at first operate in a shadow form, will aim to help patients "shop around" and compare GPs. It will take on the day-to-day running of the NHS, with a staff of around 3,500 and overall responsibility for NHS care worth ?80bn.

Risky drinkers face health threat
Men are almost 50 per cent more likely to put their health at risk by regularly drinking too much, with the problem getting worse rather than better as they settle into middle age, a poll has found.

Children claim alcohol intake of 28 units a week
A small number of children as young as 12 claimed they drank the equivalent of 19 glasses of wine a week when questioned for a health survey. Research by the independent Schools Health Education Unit suggested that 4% of those questioned aged 12 or 13 claimed they drank 28 units or more. However, the overall trend in the survey of almost 84,000 youngsters was for fewer to be drinking and smoking.

All women get right to caesarean birth on the NHS... even if they don't need it

Every mother-to-be will be given the right to have her baby by caesarean section ? even if there is no medical need ? under new guidelines.

The NHS will be told to make the operation available even to women who are capable of giving birth naturally. Previously, women were often allowed caesareans in NHS hospitals only if they were medically necessary
