Nice approves new clot-busting heart attack drug
Two years ago a study was published showing that ticagrelor cut the chance of having a second heart attack within 12 months of the first by 16 per cent, compared to the current 'gold standard', called clopidogrel. It showed that ticagrelor reduced the overall chance of dying from cardiovascular disease by 21 per cent.

Mobile phones cause 'five-fold increase in brain cancer risk'
The Swedish study found large increased incidence of astrocytoma, the most common form of a malignant brain tumour type called glioma, in those who had been using mobiles for over 10 years. The study suggests the younger you start using a mobile, the more at risk you are from developing brain cancer Campaigners said the research, published in the International Journal of Oncology, was further evidence of the need to educate children of the potential dangers of talking on mobile phones.

Doctors back driver smoking ban
Tougher legislation is needed to curb unhealthy behaviour, doctors say. Delegates at the British Medical Association's annual conference called for a ban on smoking in cars, and more action on alcohol pricing and promotion, such as an advertising ban. The union accused ministers of being too close to industry by focusing excessively on voluntary agreements.

Drastic restrictions on eye operations imposed by half of NHS trusts have put thousands of patients at risk of losing their sight, a report warns. Elderly victims of the cutbacks are being left unable to read, write or drive as they wait longer for cataract surgery, it says.
